CUNY Callouts

Keya Shirali, Brooklyn College 24, is an up-and-coming filmmaker pursuing an M.F.A. degree in producing/cinema arts at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema. A recipient of the Barry R. Feirstein ’74 Cinematic Arts Graduate Scholarship, she recently directed, produced, wrote and edited her own short film. She also co-produced a coming-of-age short film in January and has a slew of other upcoming projects. Keya speaks glowingly of the importance of the curriculum at BC, where students acquire hands-on skills like maneuvering a camera and using budget-management software and augment that knowledge by studying topics like entertainment law. She says her time at CUNY has been one of the most productive and exhilarating academic experiences she’s ever had.

Keya’s Advice: “I would highly recommend being receptive to opportunities of all kinds, especially if you’re as new to your industry of choice as I am. Most of the progress I’ve experienced in these few months – both artistic and personal – has been the result of immersing myself in collaborative environments through projects that electrify me. Don’t confine yourself to learning only a narrow set of skills!”
