Historical Tidbit:
Otto's Pond
|
This small body of water sits across from the Halifax Fire Station on Plymouth Street. You may drive by it today and not even know it. When work was done on the street to make improvements the pond became a safety factor. The state had a barrier fence installed, thus blocking our view of it.
Back in 1934, it was a rambling brook without a name. When federal aid money was available it was thought it would be a good site for a water hole where plenty of water might be procured in the time of fires.
A sum of $2,000 was received from government funds and 20 of the towns unemployed men were put to work enlarging and deepening the brook so that it covered over a quarter acre and the average depth was about five feet. The surrounding area was cleaned up and the pond was stocked with fish. People would stop there and have picnics in the shade.
This was during the depression and many young men joined the "Civilian Conservation Corps." This organization helped pull the United States out of the Depression and gave Halifax a water hole for the town center.
The site was named after Carl and Bertha Otto who were two of the owners of the property. Mr. Otto was a professional musician and he took part in numerous town affairs and his wife Bertha taught piano lessons.

Come to the Next Halifax Elementary School
Parent Teacher Organization Meeting
Wed, Feb 12th
6:30p
All Purpose Room (APR) of HES
At the first PTO meeting of 2020: "we only had 2 parents out of 588 students at the school come (excluding board and school committee members). We did a survey last year asking what day and time was preferred and that is why we have all meetings on a Wednesday at 6:30 pm this year. We had more teachers and admin that came back after working all day as well, than families. Every family is part of the PTO if you have a child at HES. This is an excellent opportunity to hear what is going on in the school, get updates from school committee and help spend money that is being raised for our students. Please mark your calendar now and come to the next meeting. We don’t bite!" Re-posted from

Notice on REAL IDs
In case you haven't heard, after October 1, 2020, you will need a REAL ID or a passport to fly within the United States or enter federal buildings.
You can get a REAL ID when you renew your licence at the RMV or AAA center if you have AAA. The AAA center is less crowded, so I'd go there if you are a AAA member.
Learn more about getting a REAL ID

Silver Lake High School Performing Arts Association is an organization of involved parents who provide help and support to the Music and Drama Departments and students at Silver Lake Regional High School. They fund-raise by selling concession items at every theater production and music department concert; raffling items; providing the Making Music nights 4 times a year and their big Pops Night Fundraiser: June 4th this year. At the Pops Night, alumni come back and perform and the Association offers tapas and desserts. The Association's newest endeavor is offering ad space in the music department concert programs; in early fall, a business can purchase one ad for all 5 concerts.

Americana
I was raised in this American Dream of opportunity. "American Ingenuity" "Freedom of choice." It's why I was empowered to learn and make my life better, and empowered to launch the BuzzAround.
It's with the wisdom of years that I have come to understand the ways that not everyone is given access to that American Dream. Sometimes it is systematic or individual bigotry or sexism.
Many voices have cried out in desperation and anguish and have brought us here to where we can see it, name it and work on changing.
The good news is that we have the ability to change... to change our communities, to change our policies and our government, to give everyone fair access to that American Dream.
|
The Buzz Around has embarked on the process of documenting the ways which we benefit society. Businesses can operate to help achieve the American Dream and take care of our planet. It does not have to be either/or it can be and/ both! Onward and upward!
