American Red Cross working with Columbia County

officials during chemical fire

ALBANY, NY (August 2, 2012) - The American Red Cross of Northeastern New York has been actively working with officials and first responders in Columbia County in the wake of a hazardous chemical fire at a chemical plant in the town of Ghent, N.Y. People who reside within a half-mile distance of the fire were advised to evacuate their homes.

Disaster Action Team volunteers were called to assist with establishing a reception center/shelter for possible evacuees in the area of the fire at the Chatham Fire Department (located at 2 Hoffman Street, Chatham, NY 12037) early this morning. Red Cross staff provided the necessary supplies to open a shelter, and anyone in need of assistance is encouraged to go to the shelter. As of this point in time, there are no shelter residents.

Officials in both Columbia and Rensselaer counties have advised those within a 15-30 mile radius of the fire to stay inside, close their windows and cease running air conditioners to avoid noxious fumes from the fire. As more details are provided regarding the Red Cross response to the fire and sheltering operations, additional updates will be shared.
