As we put a cold and snowy month behind us, activity among the Legion, Sons, and Auxiliary is really picking up!!! Planning is underway for Fish Fry Fridays scheduled for February 16 through March 29, the Friday before Easter.

Preliminary planning for the Post’s 100th Birthday celebration (TENATIVELY scheduled for Saturday June 22). Ed Behrens is making preliminary inquiries concerning permits and such to hold a Street Fest type event centered on a large tent like what we have for outdoor bingo during the Village’s Street Fest… so far, no decisions nor commitments have been made. HOWEVER, we need a Chairperson and an involved committee. If you are interested and available, and/or have suggestions please let Ed or me know.

As Post Commander, I want to thank the Auxiliary and Sons for all the SUCCESSFUL events and fundraisers they sponsor… and Legionaries for stepping up as volunteers. As you all know by now, the Adopt a Sailor event was EXTRAODINARY. The committee “knocked it out of the park”!

I also want to thank Ernie Stremel, and ALL the numerous people who were involved in a significant project to greatly improved the Post’s appearance and upgrade with the new stairs, awnings, and lighted Post sign. It was a LOT of work, including gathering required documentation (THANK YOU Fran Kelch), permits, and completing forms necessary for securing a Grant from the Village of Palatine as well as from concurrent Grant from our neighbor, Palatine Bank & Trust… THANK YOU Village of Palatine, THANK YOU Palatine Bank & Trust !!!

On a closing note, the month of February is significant for the American Legion, as you can read below:
February 3, 1943 - An extraordinary act of heroism occurred in the icy waters off Greenland after the U.S. Army transport ship Dorchester was hit by a German torpedo and began to sink rapidly. When it became apparent there were not enough life jackets, four U.S. Army chaplains on board removed theirs, handed them to frightened young soldiers, and chose to go down with the ship while praying.

Four Chaplains:
Lt. George Fox, a Methodist;
Lt. Alexander Goode, a Jewish Rabbi;
Lt. John Washington, a Roman Catholic Priest;
and Lt. Clark Poling, a Dutch Reformed minister

American Legion posts nationwide remember Four Chaplains Day with memorial services that pay tribute to the courageous chaplains and the brave young men who lost their lives on that fateful night. The American Legion Illinois 9th District will conduct the memorial service co-hosted by Merle Guild Post 208 Arlington Heights on Saturday February 3rd at 11am.

Thank YOU, … Auxiliary… Sons of the American Legion… Legionnaires… and Volunteers for ALL you do.

Every year, American Legion posts nationwide commemorate the selfless acts of the Four Chaplains on or near Feb. 3, designated Four Chaplains Day by Congress in 1948. Through interfaith services, memorial ceremonies and other solemn events, members of the American Legion Family lead their communities in honoring the chaplains and 668 other men who died when Dorchester sank.

It's hard to believe we are already a month into 2024. February is a busy month for the Auxiliary with two bingos and Fish Fry starting on the 16th.

Thank you to Marie Klanang who helped to organize the District 9 Bowling event. Also, Marie will be stepping into the role of Chaplain for the Auxiliary for the remainder of the 2024 year.

Thank you also to Eileen for setting up the Blood Drive on February 3rd. Please come out and donate to help the community.

We are still looking for more volunteers to lead committees.
Please contact one of us if you are interested.
