WHO'S READY TO PARTY?
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION IDEAS FOR YOUR BRITT'S SPECIAL DAY
By Judy Cutting
|
|
Millions of dogs wake up to a celebration just for them. Are you one of the sixty percent of dog owners who celebrate their dog’s birthday and/or "gotcha" day? Here are some fun ideas to turn the day even more special.
If you want to go all out on a party:
-
Get the word out with paw print invitations for your pup’s pals.
-
Don’t forget the outfits! Party hats, crowns, dresses, and sporty ties are perfect for those festive photos.
-
The dogs need some entertainment, so kick it up a notch with party games just for them.
-
Of course the party is not complete without pupcakes and doggie ice cream. If you want dessert ready-made, many on-line specialty and large stores will have treats ready for you to pick up and serve at the party. With just a quick Google search you will see that your party can be as big as your imagination and budget!
If a party is not your style, maybe a magical and memorable day together is perfect for you and your dog. Make the day extra special with an outing to the beach or woods, a longer walk or a new route, or a puppy play date. Maybe you take a trip to the pet store to roam the aisles together so your birthday Britt can pick out his own present. If you are registered at Petsmart, they will recognize your dog’s birthday with a card and a coupon for a free toy or treat.
Want to stay closer to home? Make a simple scavenger hunt around your home or yard. Your dog will have a blast finding the extra treats or a hidden present. Follow it with extra floor time for lots of belly and butt scratches!
However you celebrate, it will be perfect because your dog gets to spend it with you. After all, living in a forever home with unconditional love and care makes every day a gift.

We hope you’re having lots of summer fun with your Britts - but please DON'T FORGET THE WATER BOTTLE! Dogs are prone to becoming dehydrated and developing symptoms quickly. They should always have access to plenty of clean drinking water, especially when playing and exercising in the heat.
KNOW THE SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION:
Mild: dry nose, excessive drooling, lethargy, sticky gums
Moderate: loss of appetite, thick saliva, dry gums, loss of skin elasticity
Severe: vomiting, diarrhea, excessive panting, and sunken eyes
If your dog exhibits any of these signs, do not force feed water to your dog- that can lead to choking. Offer them a bowl of water and contact your vet if they show severe signs.

Woody the Wonderful is so full of life and love! He is a very active, strong boy, so he’s looking for a family with another dog to WALK, RUN, HIKE and PLAY with! Woody is also a very smart boy who came with no training, but he is learning fast and his family must be committed to continuing his training. Most importantly, he wants and needs to be with his people. A good cuddle on the couch is his favorite thing, and he is such a good boy that he can accompany you everywhere!
|
|
Sweet, smart and loving Nena will greet you each day with her contagious smile and tail thumping with joy! She is good on the leash and LOVES an adventure in the car with her people. Nena does not get along with other pets, so she will need to be placed in home with a fenced yard where she is the only pet. We are looking for a long-term foster or a forever home where Nena can enjoy a lifetime of love and happiness.
|
|
He will melt your heart! Gentle Gus is a shy boy, but when he warms up, he is all about LOVE. Open your arms, and he will run right into them for a hug. He is good with other dogs, cats, children and even chickens. If you’re looking for a buddy to binge Netflix with, Gus is your man. He has spondylosis (old age wear and tear of the vertebrae), so he is slow to get around, but he enjoys snoozing and ear rubs . . . and did we mention lots of love? Having lived most of his life outside, this boy is ready for the retirement of his dreams with you!

This playful boy loves people, toys and the backyard. If you look closely, you will see that Boston doesn’t have any teeth. Due to a gum disease, they were all extracted. He is now healthy, has no medical needs related to the disease, and he eats soft kibble just fine! He used to be home alone frequently, and as a result he is not very sure of delivery people, but he is working on that. He is really enjoying being a member of a pack for the first time in his foster home. If you can imagine yourself sitting outside soaking up the sun, Boston would love to complete that picture by being next to you!

Jade is having lots of fun with the pack of dogs in her foster home – 5 or 6 others at any given time! But she’s ready to find a family of her own, where she can enjoy walkies with her people and gaze out the window and watch the world go by. Jade is a happy, energetic and loving girl who will make a wonderful best friend and adventure mate!

Aloha! I’m Chico and I came to Las Vegas from the Big Island of Hawaii with my sister Penny (see below). I have lots of energy (maybe I can hunt some day!), and I’m having a blast swimming in the pool and playing with the rest of the dogs here. I came to my foster home not knowing much about being a Good Boy, but I am so smart and I’m doing a good job with my training. As much as I love to run, at the end of the day I like to cuddle with my person on the couch or the bed. They call me a “big love bug” here—maybe I can be yours? (If my sister can come too, that would be awesome. We like each other a lot, but it’s not necessary that we be adopted together.)

Penny came with her brother Chico (above) from Hawaii where she was found as a stray. She is a sweet, loving and very energetic girl. She enjoys swimming in the pool and playing with the other dogs in her foster home. She arrived with minimal training but is learning quickly. She has that good ole Brittany drive that may make her a great hunting partner. Penny needs a loving and understanding family who will continue her training and take her on active adventures where she can run and work her Brittany nose. She and Chico (above) can be adopted together or separately.

I read "Vacationing Without Your Dog" in the June issue. We all know that our beloved Brittanys tend to be "runners."
Consider the following scenario. You are vacationing in Hawaii. You get a frantic call from your trusted sitter in St. Louis that your beloved Brittany is missing. The sun is shining in Hawaii, but you know it is nighttime in St. Louis. How will you ever find your dog? Panic mode sets in and everyone, including the kids, goes ballistic -- BIG TIME! This scenario may or may not end well.
Consider the same scenario but instead of panic, you calmly grab your iPhone and switch on your Find My app and see on a detailed map of your neighborhood that your Brittany is one block from your home in someone else's backyard. You direct your sitter to the fourth house on the north side of the street in the next block to the east where your sitter finds your Brittany running around without a care in the world, happy as can be, playing with his new best friend, a chocolate Lab. Problem solved. Your Brittany is back.
[A version of this "good outcome" scenario actually happened to me, although I was not in beautiful Hawaii.]
Above is a photo of my Brittany with his AirTag in a red holder on his collar, a $29 investment plus the cost of the holder. I know where he is at all times, even if I am 1,000 miles away. I don't know if it works with an Android phone or if there is something similar for those phones. The AirTag seems to be waterproof. My Brittany swims with it on his collar. No problem. I change the battery about once a year. The peace of mind it brings is priceless, particularly if I am separated from him, as in "Vacationing Without Your Dog.”
