HOSA awards inaugural AAVMC Veterinary Science Scholarship

HOSA Future Health Professionals, in partnership with AAVMC, awarded the first veterinary science scholarship to support future veterinary medicine professionals. Lily Matheson was recently presented with her scholarship during the HOSA Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference in Houston, TX, in June.

The $1,000 scholarship was established to support students as they pursue veterinary school. Ms. Matheson will be a freshman at Mississippi State University this fall. She is also a 2024 Gold Award Girl Scout for her project, in which she partnered with students from the College of Veterinary Sciences at Tuskegee University. Together, they provided in-depth lessons about horse care for Girl Scout summer camp attendees at Camp Gertrude Coleman in Alabama.

The HOSA Scholarship Program is open to current HOSA members who are either seniors in high school, enrolled in a postsecondary or collegiate institution, or pursuing a certification.

Cost Comparison Tool

The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges has developed its Cost Comparison Tool to help prospective students further develop a financial plan for veterinary school. As concerns continue to grow about the increasing educational debt held by recent veterinary school graduates, it is imperative that prospective students take time to consider and plan for the costs associated with becoming a veterinarian.

Spectrum of Care Initiative

Showcasing the SOCI Task Force at the International Association of Medical Science Educators Annual Conference

The AAVMC Spectrum of Care Initiative (SOCI) supports veterinary education programs in making curricular changes to enhance students’ preparation to offer a wide range of high-quality, evidence-based care options tailored to patients’ and clients’ unique circumstances. Making curricular change can be challenging and overwhelming. Therefore, it is important for our SOCI Task Force to follow evidence-based change management strategies when guiding SOC curricular change efforts across veterinary education programs.

Dr. Heather Fedesco, Executive Director of the Spectrum of Care Initiative and Director for Academic Affairs at AAVMC, had the pleasure of showcasing the SOCI Task Force’s change management work at the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) annual conference in Minneapolis, MN on June 18, 2024. Her oral presentation focused on how the Task Force relied on USC Pullias Center’s Change Leadership Toolkit to identify and employ change management strategies to support veterinary education programs interested in making SOC curricular changes. The audience was impressed with how much the Task Force has accomplished in a short amount of time. They appreciated the Task Force modeling how the Change Leadership Toolkit can be used for making curricular change in healthcare education and look forward to accessing the materials the task force is creating.
