Installation of Solar Canopies

While solar power systems have been in use for decades, especially in Europe, the technology and application of building integrated photovoltaics, or BIPV is relatively new for the United States. Utah State University's Agricultural building is one of Trainor's most exciting solar BIPV projects to date!

With BIPV, the integration of solar power into roofing, a building envelope or canopy system  combines building performance with solar generated electrical power. Adding BIPV may cost you nothing compared to conventional building material costs! How is this possible? Learn more...

Benefits of BIPV

Trainor Crew Installing Canopies

In the long term, BIPV offers special incentives and unique tax advantages. Once in place, a conventional building uses materials that do not add to its revenue, thereby offering little if any cost savings over time. The addition of BIPV can create up to 30 years of savings through the electricity generated by the system.

Peak power demand and system energy creation occur simultaneously- during daylight hours when utility prices are highest, saving you the most money!

Trainor Glass worked closely with the university to create a design that offered the solar photovoltaic element they were looking for while providing the energy saving benefits of sunshades.  The overall building design and surrounding landscaping of the College of Agriculture are evocative of crops planted in fields, presenting multiple vertical elements.  An early concern regarding the addition of BIPV solar shades was that a prominent horizontal element would detract from the initial design concept.  Trainor was able to address this challenge by designing unframed glass solar panels with a sleek aluminum support system which served a dual purpose, providing a conduit for the system wiring while keeping all electrical elements completely concealed.

The 34 kilowatt system is comprised of one hundred and eleven 310-watt panels, each with 84 pv cells laminated between two lites of glass- ultra clear on top, tinted on the bottom for improved shading.  The angle of the panels was determined after a thorough analysis of the shading effects and benefits versus the power output variances of different aesthetics.  The final result is an attractive and highly functional integrated solar photovoltaic sunshade that the school plans to use as an educational tool, helping to discover new ways of achieving sustainability.

One of the striking elements of this project are the clean lines and whimsical accents provided by the solar canopies themselves- further proof that an architectural design can be enhanced with the addition of a BIPV system.
