A Message from the Alumni Office

We have passed the first quarter of the academic year, completed the fall athletic season, seen the leaves turn color and fall, and now look forward to the rapidly approaching holiday season beginning with Thanksgiving. Saint Joseph High School is thankful for the support of its alumni, both financially in support of the upcoming Annual Fund launch and spiritually in the form of prayers for the continuing quest of the faculty, staff, administration and students to answer God's call. The intentions of all alumni are remembered in every Saint Joe Prayer Corner and as part of the intercessions at all-school and Alumni Memorial Masses. Please take the time this Thanksgiving to give thanks to God for all of your blessings.

Please also take time to respond to the survey regarding the adoption of a new mascot/nickname for Saint Joseph High School. This survey is designed for responses from parents, faculty and staff, and alumni and will close on November 10. See the link for the survey and the Mascot Suggestion Form elsewhere in this Alumni Soundings.

Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving and may God continue to abundantly bless you.

Don Sieg '61 Plays Piano at Memorial Hospital
For Don Sieg '61, music has always been an integral part of his life. He has played keyboards in dance combos for over 60 years. After retiring in 2008, he began volunteering at Memorial Hospital. The activities at Memorial involved assisting patients in various ways and working on volunteer committees. In 2014, a new opportunity became available when the hospital acquired a fine concert grand piano for the lobby. He slowly transitioned playing in groups to playing solo. Don has impacted many lives while volunteering at Memorial Hospital. Don stated, "It is most gratifying to hear comments from many people who pass by the piano that the live music has improved their mood."
Saint Joe Welcomes Back Eli Verduzco '19!
The Mission Advancement Department is proud to welcome Saint Joe graduate Elias Verduzco, Class of 2019, to the team. Eli will fill the Mission Advancement Coordinator's position for the remainder of the 2023-2024 academic year and will perform vital tasks in data management and donor relations as well as assist with Mission Advancement events. Eli is a 2023 graduate of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, Bloomington where he earned a High Scholastic Honors diploma and Dean's List recognition all four years on campus. He previously served Saint Joe as a part-time assistant in the IT Department. Welcome, Eli!
Mascot Adoption Stakeholder Survey
Thank you for your participation in the mascot adoption process to date. We were pleased by the response of our Saint Joe community to the first survey and look forward to your continued input!

We invite you to complete a second survey created for alumni, parents/guardians, current and retired faculty/staff, and contributors. The Stakeholder Survey ("Survey #2") is open from now until November 10.

If you have not already done so, please feel free to share your ideas for the next mascot by completing the Mascot Suggestion Form.

We are proud to have been named to the 2023 AP School Honor Roll as a Silver member. 62% of Saint Joe seniors took at least one AP exam during high school, 51% of seniors scored a three or higher on at least one AP exam, and 8% of seniors took five or more AP exams.
Our New Commercial is Live!
We recently wrapped up shooting a new commercial in collaboration with WNDU. Our students did an incredible job! We can't help but feel a sense of pride and excitement about their work, and are thrilled to share the result with you.

Catch the commercial here, and watch for it on TV (WNDU) or streaming devices.
Students Excel in the Classroom
Our students had a blast participating in St. John the Baptist Catholic School of South Bend Trunk or Treat event.
Mrs. Wohlfert’s Chemistry I classes dove into the Atoms unit by conducting the Flame Test Investigation to see what color flame different chloride solutions produced when heated.
Mrs. Gergely's Honors Anatomy class perfected their suturing skills. They began with the basics and moved up to more challenging tasks. Here's to hands-on learning!

Athletics Update
Cross Country had a very successful season! The Girls were South Bend City Champions (Varsity and JV), Medalists at Culver Invitational, had 4 All-NIC runners, 7 Regional Qualifiers, and 5 Academic All-State selections. They ended with 44 season PRs.

The Boys were Medalists at the New Prairie Invitational and Culver Invitational, JV City Champions, had 2 All-NIC runners, 5 Regional Qualifiers, and 4 Academic All-State selections. They ended with 51 season PRs.

The following Cross Country runners earned Academic All-State Honors:
1st Team All-State: Meg Baxter, Molly Bellia, Lee Erdman, Sara Prokop, Jack Helm, Elliot Mark, Gabe Polanieckiand Charlie Weber
Honorable Mention All-State: Anna Hill
Football saw their season come to an end last Friday in Sectionals against NorthWood. Coach Ben Downey '96 said, "As they've done with every curveball thrown their way since their high school careers started, the seniors were undeterred and kept grinding all season. While guiding a young, inexperienced group they made sure the football team represented Saint Joe to the fullest each and every Friday night, fiercely competing against some of the area's best in exciting game after exciting game. Hopefully those young, inexperienced players learned from the seniors so they can ensure the program takes the next step in the '24 season."
Boys Soccer competed in one of the toughest schedules in 2A, competing out-of-conference against a majority of 3A schools throughout the season. The team experienced some tough competition, and showed determination all season. The team finished with a 4-12-1 record and 1-4 in conference play.
Girls Soccer defeated Marian to become NIC Champions! They finished the regular season with a record of 8-7-2 and a perfect 4-0 in conference. They took on LaPorte in Sectionals and won 4-0. That win earned them a spot in the Sectional Championship match against Penn. In a well played, entertaining Sectional Championship match, Saint Joe showed their quality, resilience, and cohesiveness as they battled Penn to the end, falling 2-1 on a last minute goal.
Boys Tennis battled top ranked Carmel High School for the Semi-State title at Culver Academy, but unfortunately fell short of their goal of advancing to the state tournament. The team finished with a 16-3 dual meet record, including a Northern Indiana Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championship.
Volleyball saw their season come to an end in Sectionals on Thursday evening at Jimtown. The team fell to the New Prairie Cougars 3-0. Volleyball finished the season with a 9-12 record.
