Cincinnati Country Day School
April 2024 Alumni Journal
| |
Wishing our Country Day community health and happiness as spring blooms.
Students returned to campus on April 1, rejuvenated from spring break and ready to launch into the final eight weeks of the school year. While the halls are once again buzzing with learning, the warmer weather has also seen our campus come into its own, with the spilling of classes into the great outdoors and students exploring their natural world.
Spring sports - baseball, softball, track & field, lacrosse, and boys tennis - are all in full flight and enjoying early success. Follow CCDS Athletics on Instagram (@CCDS_Sports) for updates on their progress.
We hope you enjoy the April issue of the Alumni Journal. As you can see, there's lots happening over the next few weeks, so look forward to a packed journal in May!

Giving Day - Tuesday, April 30
Country Day's success is deeply rooted in the generosity of its current and past families, alumni, grandparents, and friends to deliver resources to support our talented students, dedicated faculty, and enriching programs. From its founding in 1926, the school's students have stood on the shoulders of those who have gone before.
|
As we celebrate another extraordinary school year, please consider taking the opportunity to reflect on all that Country Day gave you and give back. We need your support to reach our Country Day Fund goal of just over $1,000,000 for the year!

Elizabeth Oblinger '06 Attempting Mt. Everest
· Elizabeth and her group assembled in Kathmandu (EO fifth from right).
Elizabeth Oblinger '06 has dreamed of climbing Mt. Everest for a long time, and she is finally giving it a try.
On March 29, Elizabeth and her fellow climbers assembled in Kathmandu, Nepal. From Kathmandu, the group helicoptered to Lukla in northeastern Nepal where they began their trek to their Everest base camp, which they reached on April 10. After some training on Khumbu Glacier, the team worked their way up Lobuche, a nearby peak (elevation 20,000+'), to begin acclimatizing to the thin air of the high Himalayas.
Elizabeth and her fellow climbers reached the top of Lobuche on April 15 and have returned to their Everest base camp, from which they will now begin rotations up Everest itself. The best windows for the team to summit Everest, depending on weather and other factors, will likely be in late May.
You can follow Elizabeth's adventure on a blog posted by International Mountain Guides (IMG). Elizabeth is climbing with IMG Team 2.
Good luck, Elizabeth!

InvenTeam Recognized at Cincinnati City Council Meeting with Proclamation
Wednesday, April 10, 2024, was a big day at Cincinnati City Hall with the CCDS InvenTeam! The team attended a Cincinnati City Council meeting to receive a proclamation from the City Council, sponsored by Councilmember Mark Jeffreys, recognizing their work to advance bicycle safety.
Councilmember Jeffreys introduced the team and described how impressed he was with them and their work after he visited with the team earlier this spring during CCDX Week. The team demonstrated its patent-pending invention to council members and explained the invention's purpose. Council members gave the team a standing ovation for their work and several council members congratulated them on their dedication to solving a problem that impacts the community.
Click here to view the official City Council meeting recording. The team is called up for recognition around 1:01:45.
The CCDS InvenTeam also met with the head of the Department of Transportation and Engineering, John Brazina, and civil engineers on his staff to learn about the department's bicycle safety efforts and give a demonstration of the invention. Several staff members who are bicyclists approached the team and were very interested in using the device when it's ready to market.
As Councilmember Jeffreys said, "Sometimes young people in our community do really exceptional things."
In 2023, Cincinnati Country Day School was awarded a Lemelson-MIT (LMIT) InvenTeam grant to create an invention geared towards improving road bike safety. Country Day is one of only eight high schools nationwide to be selected to have an InvenTeam for the 2023-24 school year. In June, the team will travel to Cambridge, Mass. to present its invention at EurekaFest. According to the LMIT website, "EurekaFest is an event that empowers student inventors, empowers role models, and encourages creativity and problem-solving." Congratulations to Parker Corbin `24 for being named one of 10 finalists for what some consider to be the most prestigious award a high school football player can receive in the Greater Cincinnati area. Our eclipse watch party brought together students, teachers, and families for quite an awe-inspiring event. Witnessing this rare celestial occurrence together on our beautiful campus was truly magical. Here's to moments like these that highlight our incredible Country Day community!
As part of their lesson on community, first graders took a field trip to learn all about asphalt and making roads at Jurgensen Companies. We are grateful for our community partners who provide our students with access to experts and hands-on learning fun!
To add an experiential component to their health lesson on nutrition, 6th graders made a variety of fruit and vegetable smoothies in the Dining Terrace. They researched smoothie recipes as a way to get more fruit, veggies, and protein into their diets, created ingredient lists, and experienced the joy of tasting their creations!
Kindergarteners got their turn to select a House! Compassion? Courage? Integrity? Respect? Responsibility? All Houses were excited to welcome their newest members.
During the spring Senior Seminar, seniors attended sessions presented by local professionals that addressed issues and challenges they may face as they transition to college campuses and living on their own. Some of the topics included budgeting and money management, mental health support, nutrition, and campus safety.
Our Pre-K II students have been learning about birds in outdoor education, and recently worked together to construct a life-sized eagle's nest in the north woods on our campus!
