Edwin Lee Gibson '12: Finding Fame on "The Bear
When Edwin Lee Gibson ’12 was cast as Ebraheim in “The Bear,” he was given a one-line description of his character: “A mystery who’s lived 1,000 lives.”
“That’s all Christopher Storer said about him,” Gibson says, quoting the show’s creator. “But that was all I needed. It gave me a lot of space to play.”
These days, viewers know Ebraheim as the stoic East African war veteran who runs the takeout sandwich window.

Charles Biasiny-Riviera ’90: Remembering a Photographer Who Documented Latino Life
Charles Biasiny-Riviera ’90, a street photographer who went on to dedicate his career to elevating the photography and art of underrepresented artists, has died at the age of 93.
Biasiny-Riviera passed away on August 10 at his home in Olivebridge, NY. His wife Betty Wilde-Biasiny is an artist and professor of visual arts at Empire State University.
Biasiny-Riviera, a New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent, founded En Foco in1974, as a collective of Puerto Rican photographers.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Textbooks for Students, our crowdfunding campaign. We’re weeks away from the September 30 deadline and more than three quarters of the way to our goal of $5,000.
As our students return to their studies, the need to purchase textbooks and other resources has already become a barrier. Here’s what Willie Robinson, an adjunct instructor, recently shared:
“At the start of the Fall 2024 Term, a student in my course reached out to explain that she couldn't afford the required third-party digital courseware. She asked if there was any way to complete assignments without it.

Community Conversation: “Translanguaging for Non-traditional Minority Adult Learners”
In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Gloria “Joanne” Kramer ’05, Ed.D., will present “Translanguaging for Non-traditional Minority Adult Learners.”
Date: Thursday, September 26
Time: 11 a.m. to noon.
Kramer, an assistant professor and the coordinator of TESOL at the School for Graduate Studies will explore learning literacy using translanguaging, a pedagogical approach to teaching that uses a student’s ability to move fluidly between different languages. In translanguaging, students can think in two or more languages simultaneously and use their home language as a vehicle to learn academic English.

Community Conversation: “Cybersecurity: Security for Everyone” | |

Join us for a special panel discussion in recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month:
Date: Tuesday, October 1, 2024
Time: Noon to 1 p.m.
The discussion will explore the impact and importance of cybersecurity at work and in the home. Please register. The presenters are:
- Nitin Natarajan ‘04, deputy director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, a component of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, who will speak about the cybersecurity industry
- Todd Myles, information security manager for SUNY Empire, who will discuss the institutional impact of cybersecurity
- Andrew Hurd, Ph.D., assistant professor of MSIT and M.S. cybersecurity programs at SUNY Empire, who will address the academic study of cybersecurity
The panel will be moderated by Cathryn Thurston, Ph.D., associate chair for SUNY Empire’s Department of Public Affairs, A Q&A will follow. Register for the event.

Alumni and friends can receive extraordinary tax benefits by making a gift through the 2024 New York State Tax Credit Program.
The program allows you to receive a tax credit on your 2024 NYS taxes for 85% of your authorized donation to the SUNY Impact Foundation, which in turn will transfer your gift to SUNY Empire. Additionally, 15% of your donation can be used as a deduction on your federal taxes if you itemize.

Apply to the program by September 30, 2024, to guarantee your spot. Your gift must be a minimum of $10,000 and a maximum of $100,000 and can be directed to The Fund for Empire State University or any other university program or priority you prefer.
