Tanita Allen '17, '22: Proof that Black People Get Huntington's Disease Too


May is Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month, and Tanita Allen wants you to know that people like her are out there.


She’s referring to people who are African-American and have Huntington’s Disease (HD), an inherited and progressive neurological disorder that destroys nerve cells and that most people believe occurs only in people of European descent.

Jasmine Tang '96: Teaching Chinese With Joy and Purpose


Jasmine Tang ’96 never set out to teach Chinese. But for the last 33 years, she has dedicated her career to teaching not only the language, but also the culture and customs.


Today, as a lecturer and adjunct faculty member at SUNY Geneseo and adjunct associate professor at Monroe County Community College, she is an ambassador for Chinese culture.

Upcoming Community Conversations:


The Importance of Strong Children

Join us for a conversation with Lynn Lubecki, Ed.D., on the strong children principles as they were espoused by famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The discussion will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 11 a.m. to noon. 


Turning the Dirt on the Frederick Douglass Monument

Join us for a conversation with J.D. Jackson, Jr., senior pastor at the United Church of Pittsford, who will discuss the history of the Frederick Douglass Monument. The event will be held Thursday, June 6, 11 a.m. to noon.


LGBTQI+ Missing Young People

In recognition of WorldPRIDE month, Brian Frederick, Ph.D., an assistant professor of criminal justice, will address the critical and complex issue of LGBTQI+ youth who go "missing." The problem touches on numerous social issues including homelessness, runaways, trafficking, and the challenges of unaccompanied asylum seekers. 

The event will be held on Wednesday, June 12, noon to 1 p.m.

Empire Education Networking Night

Attention educators, come learn about SUNY Empire’s graduate education programs from faculty and staff, while networking with alumni and current students already in the field.


Alumni are invited to come share internship and job opportunities, or network for a new job. The event is also a chance to discuss ways the education programs can become active in different communities. Refreshments will be served.
