State of the Market

As an owner, investor and overall cheerleader for Philadelphia, I am very concerned about the city's high office vacancy rate as a result of the shift to remote and hybrid work. In my latest Philadelphia Magazine op-ed, "Philly's Great Office Building Conversion Needs to Start Right Now," I propose some solutions for getting ahead of this problem before it gets out of hand.


The crux of the problem is a lack of high-paying jobs in the city which diminishes demand for office space, something I will discuss further in future columns. But this article really focuses on what we need to do to make converting office space into residential space a reality. It requires better utilization of tax abatements, streamlining the process and getting buy in from the state of Pennsylvania to support the efforts.

Restaurant News

The name and facade for Stephen Starr's next Rittenhouse restaurant are revealed in Historical Commission plan


Stephen Starr's announced classic Italian trattoria in the former Barnes & Noble space on the north side of Rittenhouse Square now has a working name, Borromini, and proposed facade.


Starr told The Inquirer that the restaurant would be kind of like an Italian version of Parc, serving three meals a day and with a sizable sidewalk dining space. He estimates a January 2025 opening.
