Empowering Our Youth!
"March For Our Lives LA" was held on Saturday, March 24, 2018. Youth and Families marched in Washington D.C. for gun and weapon awareness and reform and to demand the end of mass shootings in our schools. One of our Slate-Z Partners Community Coalition of South Los Angeles traveled to Washington D.C. with South Los Angeles Youth.
Seeking to stand in solidarity with the students in Florida who organized the march, the Los Angeles March was also held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Pershing Square, and some of our All Peoples and CRCD Youth had the opportunity to stand with fellow Students Nation Wide and voice their concerns regarding gun violence and mass shootings in our school and discuss ways to help end gun violence.
Edna Chavez, from our Slate-Z Partner Community Coalition, gave a speech at the Washington D.C. March on behalf of our South Los Angeles Community to raise awareness regarding gun violence and the empowerment that our Youth receive from Mentorship Programs, Mental Health Resources, Paid Internships, and Job Opportunities.
We're so proud of the civic engagement that our Youth have shown these past few months. Our YouthSource Case Manager Adrian Rios has worked with our Youth on Pre-voter Registration.
Our Youth Director Deisy Huerta works with the Teens in our Summer Youth Employment Program as they mentor the younger age groups during our Summer Day Camp along with various other events throughout the year.
During the last CD 9 Coalition meeting, a workgroup was established to develop a plan to increase Civic Engagement in 2018. Several organizations who work with Youth (including All Peoples, CD Tech, CRCD, A Place Called Home, and a representative from the Mayor's office) have joined the workgroup with focus on increasing engagement of Youth in South Central Los Angeles. Increasing voter registration and participation in Neighborhood Councils were major discussion items. The workgroup will report at the next CD 9 Coalition meeting in May, and I will keep you updated on our progress.
We're proud to stand in Support of our Youth, and have strengthened our resolve to continue with our Mission to provide social services and programs that empower individuals, and promote community, respect, and self-determination for all.
Sincerely,
Saundra Bryant
Executive Director

Outreach continues as we spread the word about EITC through various workshops. CalEITC means more money into the hands of hard working families and individuals.
Here are a few important things to know:
- The national poverty rate of single mothers is 26.6%, over 5x that of married couples and more than double that of single fathers.
- 9 out of 10 EITC dollars goes to families with dependent children.
- 3 out of 4 people that CalEITC4Me serves are women.
- Research shows that by boosting the employment of single mothers, the EITC reduces the number of female-headed households receiving cash welfare assistance.

Favorite Part of Your Job:
My favorite part about my job is bonding, helping and empowering the youth.
My best All Peoples story:
While working at Dunbar Village one day one of the students came to me upset because his teacher had given him a bad grade on his book report. We worked on it together and the following day he came back extremely happy and with a sticker his teacher gave him for doing such a great job on his book report. Although, I know this is my job to help the youth, it always feels rewarding to know that even the smallest act of helpfulness makes someone else's day.
