On May 24, CIAC held its annual Alberta Chemistry and Plastics Day at the Fairmont MacDonald in Edmonton. Approximately 75 public service members including directors, and other stakeholders from across Canada attended several panel discussions.

CIAC Board welcomes Women Building Futures
|
May 26, at the CIAC Board of Directors meeting in Edmonton, members welcomed Carol Moen, President and CEO of Women Building Futures (WBF). WBF provides financial relief to Indigenous women who attend their programs to gain skills in trades. Ms. Moen provided an update on the organization’s strategic initiatives and the contributions the industry and CIAC have made. In 2021, CIAC announced the John Vincett Responsible Care® Award through WBF.

PetroChem Canada Conference
|
Several members of CIAC will be speaking at the PetroChem Canada Conference June 21-22 in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada's premier business and technical event for downstream professionals. Christa Seaman, Director of Plastics, will be speaking on a panel on sustainable practices for post-consumer plastics, with Elena Mantagris, VP of Plastics, moderating the panel. Don Fusco, Director of Government and Stakeholder Relations for Ontario will be moderating a roundtable on renewal and transformation of the petrochemical Industry. Bob Masterson, President and CEO, will be a featured speaker.

Bob Masterson will be moderating a panel discussion on Circular Economy: Opportunities and Challenges at the Petrochemical Summit (formerly the CERI Petrochemical Conference) in Kananaskis, Alberta on June 7. Panelists will be Sarah Marshall, Nova Chemicals, Jesus Atias, Dow, and Oleta Larush, BASF Canada.

Canada’s industrial chemical sector starts 2022 on strong pathway
|
Canada’s industrial chemical sector is off to its strongest start since 2018, according to recently released data from Statistics Canada.
Shipments of industrial chemicals set a record in the first quarter with $7.69 billion worth of products sold; a 20 per cent increase from Q1 2021 levels. This was led by a surge in basic chemical production to a new quarterly record of $4.9 billion as demand continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
