In the pulpit

Sunday, April 14, 10:30 AM (NOTE: This service is at Schenectady UU.)

"Many Stories, Our Story."

This year's annual worship service will be held at 10:30 am on Sunday, April 14th at the UU Society of Schenectady, 1221 Wendell Ave., 12308. All ages will begin in the worship service, and then after a story, religious education professionals from several of our congregations will lead activities for children and youth in the UU Schenectady classrooms. A potluck finger food social hour and social justice planning session will follow the service and activities, so if you are able, please bring some finger food to share.

Join Rev. Ashley DeTar Birt from New York Unitarian Universalist Justice and friends from across the Hudson Mohawk cluster of UU congregations as we explore how social justice isn’t just something one does to help others; it is communal, spiritual work that unites us across backgrounds and helps us all.

Sunday, April 21, 10:00 AM

“Environmental Justice in Albany,” Green Sanctuary Team

This is the annual Green Sanctuary Team Earth Day Service. This year we are focusing on the impacts of environmental problems in our own neighborhood and what can be done about them. We have invited Rev. Marc Johnson, Owusu Anane, and Susan Cotner to participate in the service.

Rev. Johnson is from the St. John’s Church of God In Christ in Albany’s South End. He has been an environmental activist for many years. Owusu Anane is the Albany Common Council representative from the 10th Ward. He will discuss environmental justice issues in Albany. Susan Cotner is the executive director of the Affordable Housing Partnership (AHP). She will be discussing how Albany UU can assist the AHP in promoting a new $5 million dollar grant program for homeowners in our neighborhood to make repairs and improvements to their homes.

Programs for Children and Youth

Sunday, April 14- our theme this month is Interdependence, and what better way to celebrate than with a joint service combining five neighboring congregations? We look forward to spending time with folks from the Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, & Catskill area UU churches. You can also check out Soulful Home for ways to explore in your household!

  • Service is at 10:30 AM at Schenectady UU, 1221 Wendell Avenue, Schenectady, NY 12308
  • Child Care is for ages 5 and under is available
  • After the story in service, there will be separate activities for children and youth with Elizabeth; HB Steadham, Director of Lifespan Religious Education at UU of Schenectady; and Jamie Gargano, Director of Religious Education at UU Congregation of Saratoga Springs.
  • Coffee Hour to follow- please bring a snack to share!

Save the Date- the end of regular church year programming for children & youth is on the horizon, with final small group meetings (including parent/guardian OWL celebrations) on 5/12 and our Youth Group service and volunteer appreciation "Sundae Sunday" on 5/19. Mark those calendars!

Transition Updates

What has the Transition Team been up to?

(a lot of listening)

The Transition Team conducted 12 Transition Listening Circles (TLCs) in February. These TLCs consisted of a structured 90-minute process allowing each person to share their thoughts on Albany UU - What do you celebrate? What are your concerns? And what do you hope for the future of Albany UU?

The TLCs were attended by more than 100 members of the congregation. This level of participation greatly exceeded our hopes and expectations. In March, we held two more TLCs, one for the Youth Group and one for the Staff. Both were also welcomed by their attendees and provided further insights. Additionally, we offered the opportunity to submit comments through an online survey publicized in Windows. All together, these efforts resulted in thoughtful answers from 119 Albany UUs! The records of each session and submission were then anonymized and compiled.

With that data in hand, we met after the Service last Sunday to begin to distill the information into a workable form, and to prepare a report to the Congregation. We are also preparing the Sunday Service on May 5 which will be led by Reverend Margret O’Neall.

The data are still being analyzed, but an early impression is that many of the topics of greatest interest had come up at the Transition Start-Up Workshop held last October 22, with about 60 participants. And it will not be a surprise that “Community” was a major theme of the TLCs as well as the October workshop. But there were many new insights offered in February that are now being studied.

The eight-member Transition Team (Ireta London, Betsey Miller, Jon Newell, Léa N'ko Ryman, Pascelle Saint-Laurent, Stephanie Saunders, Peggy Sherman and Todd

Thomas) was appointed by the Board in late September.

Announcements

KUDOS

"Thank you for all your understanding, caring and compassion when I had to abandon the service at almost the last minute on Sunday, April 7. I walked into the building at 8:30 am. only to receive a phone call from husband that he was "having chest pains and had called 911".

Fortunately, he is doing well. It was not a heart attack. Instead, it was SVT, or Supra -Ventricular Tachycardia, a racing heartbeat of more than 200 beats per minute. Cardioversion in the emergency room has corrected the problem- for now. He was hospitalized for 28 hours, and is now at home resuming his normal activities. It may have been an after-effect of COVID.

Great gratitude to Pam Collins. who stepped in to read the service. Pam was already on deck to do the sermon about religious language in dialog with me, and to serve as service leader. She did a superb job of reading the entire service, including both parts of the sermon. KUDOS to Pam and all of you who stepped up to assist.

In gratitude, Rev. Linda"

...to Pam Collins for conducting service on April 7, and Sharon Babala for asking "What can I do to help?" which involved reading, chalice lighting/extinguishing, and other Service Associate roles on short notice.

...to Reg Foster for repainting a portion of our kitchen and making it look so nice!

...to the Reception Committee for being flexible and willing to the change the location of Sally Knapp's reception, and Betsy Wright and Ilene Kane for greeting and guiding visitors.

An Invitation for your stories

May 12 is Mothers Day. At Albany UU, we’ll be celebrating the mothers and fathers — the parents — of this church. Please share your story with Rev. Lynn of someone whose story — or any story from this congregation’s past — that has inspired you. In what way/s and/or how — has that person or story made a difference in your life? While we won’t have time to share all of your stories during the service, we will find a way to share them. Please send your messages to revlynnashley@albanyuu.org by May 1.

An Invitation to Veterans

If you have served in any capacity in the military, please join me (Rev. Lynn) for conversation as I prepare for our Memorial Day service, Sunday, May 26. Four times have been set aside for sharing in person or by zoom:

Saturday, April 20, at 10:00 by zoom (link to be provided)

Sunday, April 28, after the morning service

Monday, May 6, at 10:30 for coffee at the church

Thursday, May 16, at noon at the church (Bring a sandwich if you’d like)

Please let me know which time (or times) you’re available. If none of them works, I’d still like to hear from you at revlynnashley@albanyuu.org.

SAVING THE ORGAN - Last Call - We Need to hear from you by April 14.

Fifteen people responded to our request in Windows Weekly for thoughts and feelings about what should happen to the organ in the old sanctuary.  Twelve people were in favor of keeping it, four said, “let it go” and a couple were in both camps.

A compendium of the comments may be read HERE.

If you want to work on saving the organ we need to hear from you by April 14, 2024. After that time, we will recruit a chair for the project and a meeting will be held for all interested parties. If you are interested in working on this project please let us know how you would like to be involved by completing this form: https://fuusa.breezechms.com/form/a10f658929. Read more about the scope of work HERE.

Upcoming Memorial Services

A Memorial Service for Lois Thomson will be held Saturday, May 4, at 2:00 PM in Community Hall and on Zoom, and followed by a reception in Channing Hall.

No Video Recording for March 10: Growing Up and Growing Older

Unfortunately, we accidentally neglected to record March 10's service "Growing Up and Growing Older." We thank the service leaders and youth who made this service possible and we apologize that there is no recording.

Neuroscience of Spirituality

In the service on April 7, a few folks found it difficult to hear the video played, "Neuroscience of Spirituality." Here is the link for those interested:

Meet the Candidates

In this period of transition to a new settled minister, new and important responsibilities must be undertaken by the leaders of our community. Beginning with the upcoming election in May, we will be choosing those who will guide us through our transition and select the members of our Ministerial Search Team. It is therefore, all the more important we take the upcoming election seriously and choose wisely.

Our bylaws require that only the Nominating Committee have contested elections. They also permit other nominations from the community for any open position. The Nominating Committee received no such nominations, so the only contested election is for the five open seats on the Nominating Committee. Nevertheless, in order to better get to know those members of our community who are willing to shoulder the responsibilities of leadership, we strongly suggest you read the attached candidate biographies and plan to attend at least one of the two Meet the Candidates events we have planned. The first (in-person) meeting will be in Community Hall on Sunday, April 21 following the service. The second (Zoom) meeting will be on Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 pm. You can join the meeting at: https://tinyurl.com/AlbanyUU-Conversation

It is with gratitude and humility that we acknowledge that we are learning, speaking and gathering on the ancestral homelands of the Mohican people who are the indigenous peoples of this land. Despite tremendous hardship in being forced from here, today their community resides in Wisconsin and is known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. We pay honor and respect to their ancestors past and present as we commit to building a more inclusive and equitable space for all.
