Alabama Hills National Scenic Area

Newsletter, November 2023

Field Work

  • In accordance with the Alabama Hills Management Plan, select road sections are currently being converted to single track trails or restored entirely. This work will continue through December.
  • BLM and ESIA staff have begun maintenance on the Mobius Arch Trail to prevent further use of social trails. Hundreds of pounds of mango-sized rocks have been foraged and walked to bare trail edges to reinforce the proper path.
  • Staff reinforced the boundary of 5 designated sites in the core camping areas with basketball-sized stones to deter the growth of disturbed areas.
  • Golden fall colors saturated the branching creek beds throughout the hills this November, with the last of the color fading on Moffat Ranch Road.
  • The Whitney Portal Road detour remains in effect. Trailers and large RVs continue to detour to Lubken Canyon Road.
  • BLM and ESIA have finished with Friday evening tabling, but continue to have Saturday Ranger Programs (see schedule below).
  • As a reminder, camping agreements are live. Agreements are free and do not guarantee a campsite- all camping is first come, first serve. This is an acknowledgment that campers understand the rules and guidance for designated camping. To get an agreement, please visit the webpage or talk with a ranger in the Alabama Hills.
  • Staff have been working hard to clean out fire rings, collect trash, monitor camping behavior, update signs, and educate visitors about the importance of Leave No Trace.
  • ESIA’s interpretive specialist has been compiling photos of wildlife in the Alabama Hills. Do you have an interesting sighting? Email Ashley at ashley@esiaonline.org
