Hiring Trends


As of July 15, 2024, we have seen airline hiring experience a a rapid slowdown and even come to a grinding halt at companies like American Airlines and JetBlue amongst others. The slow down at American is attributed to the aircraft delivery delays that are plaguing Boeing and Airbus and slowing down airline growth aspirations. United also dealt with the same issues and briefly paused hiring for a few months this year. Additionally, we are starting to see regional airline hiring normalize after a long period of massive bonuses for Direct Entry Captain's and Experienced First Officers. Regional airlines are finally able to get their staffing in check and hire a steady stream of new First Officers once more.

HIRING FAQ OF THE MONTH

Q: Should you sign a training contract?


A: Like everything in this industry and in life, this is largely dependent on a pilot's personal situation as well as the current hiring market.


The best thing we can tell you to do is to read the fine print and understand how this can affect you moving forward. Understand that the pilot hiring market is rapidly slowing down but can also reverse course extremely quickly. We have recently seen retention contracts hinder a pilot's ability to leave their current regional because they cannot afford to repay the bonus they received. The same thing can happen with a training contract.


The best question to ask yourself is, "If I signed the training contract today but mainline hiring restarted tomorrow, would I be comfortable staying for the duration of my training contract? If not, will I be able to repay the lump sum?"

TIPS FROM OUR RECRUITING TEAM

While it seems that movement has stopped for a large majority of the industry, all indications right now point to this just being a temporary delay of the next hiring wave. This means that now is the time to position yourself to be at the front of the line when mass hiring restarts. So what can you do?


Don't wait to apply until hiring has restarted. Put your application in now, because recruiters are currently looking at applications that they want to pull for interviews when they are given the green light. Take time to network and meet people at other airlines. These connections can give you letters of recommendation that can push your app to the top.


As someone who has first hand experience with furloughs and hiring pauses during COVID, we were able to personally see that the pilots who used this time to their advantage, excelled past their peers. The others that didn't use that time wisely potentially cost themselves thousands of seniority numbers.

Time is on your side right now. Use it wisely.
