Greetings!

Greetings from Uganda!

We have been busy adjusting to the jet lag, culture, and enjoying the people here.  God is doing some great things.

We have been working on selecting the Board of Directors (B.O.D.) for AFR Uganda, drafting the Articles of Association, filing for registration of the new NGO (that's Non Government Organization or non-profit to us in the USA) climbing through the red tape, but making some great headway.

Our vision for a holistic ministry to the poorest of the poor, starts with the local Ugandan church.  Right now, we are visiting 8-10 churches in rural areas, and hoping to select 3-4 for our program.  We are specifically looking for churches that are in great need, but who are also reaching out to their community with what they have.

Once we have selected the 3-4 churches, we will have each church and the community leaders nominate 50-70 families, the poorest of the poor, for our 3 year family sponsorship program.  The final approval of which families make the list is carefully and prayerfully decided by the AFR Ugandan B.O.D. It is so exciting to be able to think of bringing hope and dignity to these precious people.

Once the families are approved, they will be photographed, and biographies typed up.  Please be in prayer about sponsoring a family with AFR.

We hope to have 3-4 churches/communities ready to partner with churches in the USA by November this year, and launch our family sponsorship program January/February 2012!

We can not do this without your help!  We still have need of monthly partners.  Our goal is to raise our own salary separate from our Ugandan family sponsorship program, so that the majority of each dollar for a family sponsorship gets to Africa. If God puts it on your heart to give please don't hesitate to do so.  We are closer to our goal and we know that with God all things are possible!

Thank you for your help!

Pastor Daniel's Church

Melody and Pastor Daniel feeding some of the orphans

melody feeding orphans

Meet Pastor Daniel.  He and his wife Susan have 3 boys, and have been caring for 17 orphans since he was in seminary.  The picture at the top of this email, shows his village church that he started. It has NO ROOF, NO FLOOR, and NO WALLS.  He moved to this rural area in complete obedience to God's calling.  The area he is ministering in was abandoned by all churches due to the high level of witchcraft.  Daniel and Susan have sacrificed greatly to follow this strong leading.  Susan lost one of her boys after giving birth, because they could not get proper medical help in such a rural area.  We were humbled by the incredible selfless acts of love this family does on a daily basis.  This church is in our top three, please pray for a church partner in the USA to come along side them!

Serious concern in Uganda

little girl

There is only one time in my life I have seen a witch doctor.  Three years ago in Uganda, I stumbled upon her doing a ceremony in someone's family compound.  She was squatting low to the ground with a dead headless chicken in her hands.  It lay limply between her bloody fingers as she shook the blood out over the small bones in a pile below it.  Her hair looked unkempt and her eyes squinting looked straight through me.  I felt violated in that one second as if she could tell I was on the wrong side.  The men standing around her seemed stunned that I was there and uncomfortable as well.

After spending 3 weeks here I can tell you there is much more of this going on then I knew.  I am now regularly exposed to close friends here who are being convinced to make sacrifices to their local witch doctors or fear the consequences.  The farthest extent of their curses and blessings can result in kidnapping babies, street children and unsuspecting toddlers for the purpose of using heads and blood for medicinal purposes and the occasional business man looking to become wealthy is assured that sacrificing their child will result in untold wealth.  The government in Uganda is doing all it can to stop the murders of these innocent children.  But the local villages with uneducated men and women believe strongly in the witch doctors and often offer up one of their own children to protect the entire family as a whole. To read more about this click here ABC/2020 story

It is a sickening and terrifying realization that I am doing battle against these "traditional" medicine men and women.  Winnie, one of our employees, had been attacked in third grade by a man looking to have her killed by the local witch doctor.  He was chased away by mob justice, but Winnie is still haunted by that day.  She remembers it with great terror.

I have spent a few nights waking up from nightmares.  I am praying hard for the children of Uganda and hope to make a difference in the villages we are working in by speaking the truth of God's love and power.  However, I also realize I have become a target by standing so firmly against these local power hungry evil doers.  Pray for our protection!

 Thanks, Melody
