A summary of the August 9 Goodyear Faith Community Roundtable meeting.
August 9 Agenda Highlights:
Julie O'Dell, statewide adoptions manager for DES: In order to minimize disruption for the child and to promote successful reunification, whenever possible it is important to place children in foster homes that allow them to remain close to their friends, school, church, and family. Homes are currently needed for Goodyear children of all ages.

Katie O'Dell, AZ 1.27: Children need families. Families need community. Churches make great communities. Arizona 1.27 is a movement of churches engaging the church in foster care and adoption.

Jenica McMaster, CarePortal Regional Manager: The Care Portal anticipates launching in Maricopa county in September. Child Welfare workers uncover the needs. The Care Portal makes local Churches aware, giving them a timely, non-threatening invitation and opportunity to respond. Watch the video.

Aimee Yamamori, Homeless Youth Connection Host Family Program: HYC is a community engagement model;  host families volunteer to assist the youth and the youth volunteer to stay with the host family.  Youth are referred by the school and must stay enrolled in school in order to receive services.

Help Wanted: Foster Care Review Board Members
Over 20,000 kids are in the Arizona foster care system and the number is steadily growing. Volunteers Foster Care Review Board (FCRB) members are needed to advise  the juvenile court on progress toward achieving a permanent home for a child involved in a dependency action and in out-of-home placement.

Volunteers are appointed to fill vacancies on the five-member boards by the presiding juvenile court judge in the county, each serving a maximum of a three-year term. New board member orientation and on-going training are provided to volunteers. Each volunteer is assigned to one review board which meets for approximately eight hours on a weekday (Monday-Friday), a maximum of 12 times per year. Volunteers must also be able to commit approximately six to eight hours at home reviewing case information in preparation for the case review.

The FCRB is mandated to make determinations in four key areas: safety, necessity and appropriateness of placement; case plan compliance; progress toward mitigating the need for foster care; and a likely target date by which the child may be returned home or placed for adoption or permanent guardianship; however, n o specific qualifications are necessary in order to serve on a board.
