INTRODUCING: MIZZEN by MOTT
Mizzen by Mott
is a new app built with and for afterschool professionals to provide high-quality, engaging learning content to the afterschool field.
To meet the needs of this moment, the
Mizzen team has added new activity playlists and multi-week modules that can be done at home or in small-group settings.
The app’s content focuses on youth learning and well-being and is provided by organizations like Jazz at Lincoln Center, the California Academy of Sciences, After-School All-Stars, OregonAsk and VentureLab. Through support from the Mott Foundation, the app and all of its content are available for free to afterschool providers.

As we ramp up our online Professional Development offerings, we are looking for presenters interested in hosting one of our bi-weekly Best Practice Webinars! Our current open dates for presenting include May 26th, June 9th and June 23rd.

New Member Spotlight!
Over the past few months, we have been welcoming new members to our Strategic Leadership Team. This month, we would like to introduce Andy Ball and Dawn Oliver Wiand!

Andy Ball
Andy Ball joined Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa in 2018 as the Chief Financial Officer. He previously held positions at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, St. Augustin Parish, and in private enterprise. Raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Andy attended Drake University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree. While at Drake, Andy began working for Microware Systems Corporation, a computer software startup where he rose to Executive Vice President, International Operations. After an IPO, Andy left Microware and pursued an MBA at the University of Iowa which he received with honors in 2004. Andy was drawn to the mission of non-profit organizations after working in the private sector. He believes that there is no greater goal than helping at-risk youth become productive members of our community.

Dawn Oliver Wiand
Dawn Oliver Wiand is originally from Des Moines and is a graduate of the University of Iowa. She returned to Iowa City after 30 years in Kansas City where she served as the Executive Director for the Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City. She joined the Iowa Women’s Foundation as Executive Director in February 2013.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work and has worked in the nonprofit field for more than 34 years as a volunteer and professional. She spent the first 15 years in the public housing field, providing direct services, and then moved into nonprofit management, focusing on fundraising and ultimately providing vision, leadership and management to two women's funds.
In 2013, the Corridor Business Journal named Dawn as one of the area’s Movers & Shakers. She was recognized by HER Magazine, a publication of The Gazette, as a 2018 HER Women of Achievement Award honoree. She truly believes that "improving the lives of women and girls is a must, not only for our families but our communities and, ultimately, our country!"

April 20 - 24 was Afterschool Appreciation Week. We wanted to take this time to recognize and appreciate those who work with young people during out of school hours and say “Thank You!”

We are committed to supporting the professionals who provide expanded learning opportunities that will help close the achievement gap and prepare young people to compete in the global economy.
