AACWM African American History Month Kickoff
Friday February 1, 2013 @7pm

The African American Civil War Museum kicks off African American History Month with poetry, song and a lecture. In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation, curator Hari Jones will present a lecture entitled "Adding a Powerful Ally: How the Emancipation Proclamation Changed the Civil War."  Jones explores President Lincoln's implementation and defense of the emancipation policy and the contributions of African Americans to the Union military effort in 1863. This is a free event.

Sesquicentennial...
January

On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the final Emancipation Proclamation.  Declaring free the enslaved in the 10 states in rebellion, Lincoln also ordered the War Department to enlist "such persons of suitable condition... into the armed service of the United States."   Recruiting had begun before the Proclamation, but it wasn't until January 1863 that President Lincoln personally began writing letters to his field commanders encouraging and ordering his generals to "vigorously" recruit men of African descent.
