Meet This Week to Discuss Shrimp Trawl Area Closure
The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is proposing closing shrimp trawling in dozens of areas from Kitty Hawk to Sneads Ferry to protect submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). Thousands of acres that include a multitude of areas traditionally worked by small shrimp boats.
Areas including but not limited to in Dare County; the Roanoke Sound, western shore of the Croatan Sound, shoreline from Stumpy Point to Parched Corn Bay.
Areas including but not limited to in Hyde County; Berry’s Bay, White Plains, Middleton, Outfall Canal, East Bluff, West Bluff.
Areas including but not limited to in Tar, Pamlico, and Neuse Rivers; southern Pamlico River shoreline, Goose Creek, shorelines in Bay River, South River, West Bay.
Areas including but not limited to large areas of; Core Sound, Back Sound, North River, Newport River, Cedar Point, Sander’s Island, shorelines in New River.
These closure areas are still open for discussion. DMF has already changed
at least one area since this proposal was first presented due to people voicing their concerns. If any of these proposed closures will affect you or people you know please attend one of these meetings and get your comments on record.
