Elephant Update

Witnessing the continuing relationship developing between Bo, Mundi, and Tarra is a gift our caregivers cherish. Although you cannot be here in person, EleCam viewers have an opportunity to learn about authentic elephant behavior. Unobtrusively you are witness to Bo, Mundi, and Tarra’s most tender moments and Mundi’s sheer abandon in the mud hole. What you see is pure elephant behavior, nothing orchestrated for human enjoyment, just elephants being elephants. As a result, viewers learn more about elephants than they could imagine.

On the surface this past month resembled any other, Bo and Mundi constantly together, Tarra joining periodically and then off on a lone adventure again. But this month has been different. We’ve observed a deepening in the connection all three share. Tarra has spent much more time sandwiched between Mundi and Bo, midday, under the shade of oak trees, or grazing peacefully in the pastures. Much more often than before, Mundi leaves Bo in search of Tarra. When Mundi finds her, Tarra remains calm and welcoming, intertwining trunks with her younger sister from another mother.

Bo, the gentle teacher, lays down the rules, and Mundi is an eager student.

Surprisingly and somewhat out of character, Tarra has been observed following Mundi as she wanders off to graze in a new area. This apparent deepening of attachment is a good sign, they are friends, and comfortable with their relationship.

Tarra's got that big sister vibe with Mundi, her little sis from another miss!

A few days ago, after Tarra headed out on what was intended to be another solo adventure, Mundi and Bo followed. Their exploration took them deep into the 750-acre habitat. No doubt Tarra was showing them all the special places familiar to her. They stopped off at Elephant Lake for a swim. From the footprints, manure deposits, and sleeping spots, it was obvious that the lake-side party became their campsite because they spent the night in this remote location. It is rewarding to realize how safe these three feel in their home. They returned just after sunrise, slowly sauntering up the dirt path leading back to “civilization” and their anticipated breakfast.

Tarra and Bo share a tender trunk embrace.

Bo is laid back, mellow, and shows no signs of aggression, ever. So, he has rules that seem to apply only to Mundi. He allows Tarra to share his breakfast. But without him uttering a vocalization audible to the human ear, Mundi knows she is not allowed to take Bo’s food. The extent of his body language, indicating Mundi should not approach, is a casual hind leg lift, enough for Mundi to know, that this food is mine. We have observed over this past year that Bo is a gentle teacher, and Mundi is an eager student. Tarra appears to be the kind and compassionate mother figure. She never openly corrects Mundi or displaces her for food or attention. She also shows no fear for her own bodily welfare when Mundi comes close. They are trusting friends, a loving family, and an example of peace that brings joy to the lucky ones who are witnesses to their lives.

Adventure Awaits: Tarra, Mundi, and Bo set off on a journey through the 750-acre habitat.

Although Nepal experienced an incredible growth of forest area over the last few decades thanks to conservation-minded groups and individuals, these remarkable strides are now at risk from commercial exploitation as politics/government get in the way of field research and protecting national parks by authorizing hydropower and road development.

After 43 years of captivity, Charlie, Pretoria's last zoo elephant, has been released back into nature. Captured as a calf in Zimbabwe and later sent to a circus, Charlie spent the majority of his life at the Pretoria Zoo. His release to the Shambala Private Game Reserve marks the culmination of extensive efforts by animal welfare groups. This move is being celebrated as a significant milestone in South Africa’s wildlife conservation history. Despite concerns about his long-term adaptation, this event represents a hopeful new chapter for Charlie.
