December 2022

Dear fellow alumni,

There are two things I am particularly thankful for this week that I would like to share with you; One is Concordia’s Advent meditations, Advent Anticipation: The Arrival of Our Savior. The other includes some thoughts from the weekly Bible study hosted on campus by Pastor Steve Smith.

The excerpt below is from education professor Dr, Kathleen Kannass, Living in Advent Hope.

“God is with us. This is the promise of the holy Advent season.

“Living in Advent hope is about our daily life in Christ. He is our hope. I love the straightforward directions of I Peter 3:8, Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. God calls us to live these words in our work with each other at Concordia, at home with our families, as a neighbor to all, no matter where we are.”

The certainty of the hope we have in Christ (Immanuel, literally, “God with us”) really came to light this week as the campus Bible study group discussed the miracle of Jesus calming the storm and also the account of Jesus walking on the water. Over the course of the conversation, we discussed the interesting reality that Jesus sometimes intervenes to take charge and calm the storms in our lives. While at other times, He comes alongside to strengthen and equip us to weather the storms we face. How wonderful it is to be reminded of God’s promise to be with us always as we endure the challenges and embrace the joys.

In whatever circumstances we encounter, God is with us, providing hope and confidence through faith. Whether we are in the midst of the storm or we have emerged from the tempest, we can be assured that God is with us, He is at work and He surrounds us with His love.

I pray Advent hope brings you great joy this season and you can be “like-minded” shining the Light as a CHRISTmas blessing to others!

God’s peace be yours,

Sensory Room helps AbleLight college students

AbleLight College’s new sensory room, a joint effort with CUW’s Department of Residence Life, is a cozy space in the lower level of Chemnitz Hall. It is appointed with adjustable lighting, a cushy lounge area, calming images, fidget toys, a white noise generator, and even a small tent in which to escape, if needed. It’s all designed to help stressed-out, overstimulated students self-regulate so they can stay calm, focused, and ready for learning and socializing. It's because of our donors that we are able to provide students with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to turn their dreams of a college education into reality. THANK YOU! New online course: Digital Ministry

With an ever-increasing number of churches embracing hybrid services, video conferencing and other digital means, it’s important for pastors and ministry leaders to think through the benefits and limitations of online ministry. That topic will be explored in a new six-week online continuing education course, “Making Sense of Ministry in a Digital World,” offered in partnership by Concordia Seminary, St. Louis with Concordia University Wisconsin and Ann Arbor (CUWAA).

Sessions begin January 17 and will be taught by Jamie Crustals, curriculum design and development specialist at Concordia Seminary; Thomas Davila, adjunct professor for CUWAA in the area of digital ministry; and Rev. Trevor Sutton, senior pastor at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Haslett, Mich., and Ph.D. candidate at Concordia Seminary.

Six live sessions will be taught Tuesdays through February 21 via Zoom:

  • Digital world versus the analog world
  • Evangelism and engagement
  • Teaching and Bible study
  • Pastoral care and relationships
  • Worship and proclamation
  • Community and congregation

The fee for the course is $99, which includes one Continuing Education Unit (CEU). Register by January 10, 2023. For more information, contact Concordia University Continuing Education Studies at continuing.education@cuw.edu

Get your Red Elephant Chocolate with alumni discount

Concordia is now the owner of a former Third Ward favorite, Red Elephant Chocolate, and students are getting involved in the hands-on lessons the on-campus chocolate business offers. Earlier this year, Concordia acquired the assets of Red Elephant Chocolate, which was founded by Richard Koenings. The business is now called Concordia Red Elephant Chocolates. The Concordia Red Elephant Chocolates team is hard at work for the holiday season. There’s no longer a storefront. Instead, the operation runs out of CUW’s professional-grade kitchen on campus. Alumni are invited to order Red Elephant Chocolate for the holidays or any special occasion. Use the code Concordia10 to access a 10 percent discount when you place your order online.
