“Healthy Habits for

a Successful School Year"

Workshop and Dinner

Our "Being Well" workshop series is back on this Sunday, September 15 from 6 to 7:30 pm with the topic: Healthy Habits for a Successful School Year.

Dr. Matt Bitsko and Mr. Adam Bender of Summit Emotional Health will lead the parent workshop (parents with children of all ages are invited). School counselors Clare Trow and Joy Jones will lead workshops for youth in grades 6-12.

Afterwards, there will be a community dinner from 7 to 7:30 pm.

It’s one week away!

Our new “Wednesday Nights at St. James’s” kicks off next Wednesday, September 18 – with dinner only starting at 6.

We’re very excited about the prospect of adding classes to our Wednesday Night plans – plus we’re opening our doors to our neighbors and inviting them to join us for dinner. Dinner is free to everyone but we will still welcome contributions.

We can’t wait to see you in Valentine Hall next Wednesday as we begin a new chapter in our very special Wednesday Night programming.

Moving forward, we encourage you to go to the church calendar

for a peek at what's going on at St. James's.

doers.org/calendar/. There's also a link on the home page of doers.org.

When you click on a church calendar event, you will see a screen like the one shown above. There's no need to login to RSVP, just scroll down for event details.

Because the calendar is now being regularly updated, we don't see a need for the Peek at the Week feature in future emails.

A Mixed-Aged Weekend Mission Experience to Hurley, VA

November 1-4, 2024.

Our mission ministry is looking to expand and strengthen our partnership with the Hurley Community Development Center, and YOU are invited. Missioners to Hurley have ranged from 2 to 72!

A group of mixed ages will travel to Hurley this fall with the intent to "be with" the people in Hurley. Instead of focusing on swinging hammers, while we're there we'll hear stories, explore their community, play bingo with the families, eat lots of delicious meals, do some chores around the community center, worship together, and swap contact information.

We're learning that mission partnerships are best when they're based on mutual relationships and we invite anyone who's interested to join. Children and youth are welcome to participate with an accompanying parent.

Contact Mary Beth Abplanalp at marybethabplanalp@gmail.com for more information or to sign up.

Our first Sacred Ground class has filled up. But you can get on the list for a second class.

The response to our announcement of a new Sacred Ground series has been great – and the class is filled up. But we’d like to create a second class, so if you’re interested in joining, reach out to Andy (804-615-2425) or Suzanne (804-839-3488), or email us at DoersSacredGround@gmail.com

To Love and Heal: A one-day conference of the Creation Care Committee of the Diocese of Virginia.

There are things we can do NOW to save our planet (and our own backyards) for future generations – and things our churches can do to lead the way.

If you’re called to care for our planet, please consider attending this special conference on Saturday, September 28, from 10 am to 4:30 pm at The Virginia Diocesan Center at Roslyn, 8727 River Road, Henrico, VA 23229.

You can learn more the conference here.

You can register here.

Thanks to everyone who has already filled out the Holy Cow survey. The response has been terrific, and your input is invaluable as we assess where we are as a church.

If you didn’t receive the survey or you know someone who didn’t receive one but wants to complete it, please reach out to Betsy Lee at blee@doers.org or at 804-355-1779 x335.

Likewise, if you have questions – or if you prefer a paper copy of the survey or know someone who needs a paper copy – Betsy can help with that too.

Remember the survey needs to be completed no later than noon on Friday, Sept. 20.

Friday Office Hours

Because all members of our clergy and program staff who work on Sundays, as well as part-time staff, take Friday as their day off, we only have a few administrative staff who work on Fridays. We have decided to continue our summer practice of closing the office on Fridays, and those staff members who normally work on Fridays now have the option to work that day from home.

Our new technology allows staff full access to computer files, the ability to transfer office phone numbers to home or cell, and email, so those folks will still be fully available and will be happy to meet with you at the church by appointment. Our housekeeping crew will be on site to receive deliveries. And of course, events on Fridays such as funerals will be appropriately staffed as always.

Parish House Hours

Monday - Thursday: 9 am to 5 pm

Friday: Staff works remotely - available via phone, email or in-person by appointment
