Autumn Tree Planting Season in Virginia

An important goal of our community is to plant more native trees, and autumn is the best time to do that. October celebrates Native Tree Month here in Virginia, so it is important to educate ourselves on maintaining our forests from invasive species and disease. We need to plant and preserve more of our native trees. Most of the places that need them are on private property. Learn more in this article on the Plant NOVA Trees website.

ECHO Charity Night at Bonefish Grill on October 25th

Ecumenical Community Helping Others (ECHO) has been doing incredible work in the Burke-Springfield community since 1969. Leadership and the support team are led by volunteers dedicated to service in the community. Whether it is providing school supplies to children, CROP walks to address hunger in the community, hosting food pantries and much more. To support these efforts, they rely on donations for their day-to-day operations.

On October 25th from 4-9pm, the Bonefish Grill located at 5920 Kingstowne Towne Center in Alexandria has committed a share of their proceeds to support ECHO. Those who attend do not require a flyer or register, so please attend and have a nice meal!

Herralink Hosts 2023 Halloween Bash with Dulles Health and Rehab Center on October 29th

Herralink, is a volunteer organization that connects high schoolers with our older residents in retirement and independent living homes. Isolation and loneliness have been identified by the Surgeon General as two of the greatest problems of our older population. As Chair of the Older Adults committee, I know intergenerational programs like Herralink, GrandInvolve and Shark Tank are an important part of making our County a better place for our older adults. Please join me at this great intergenerational event.

Distinguished Alumni Hall for West Springfield High School - Seeking Recommendations

I joined Principal Mukai at halftime of a rainy West Springfield High School football game last Friday to announce the establishment of a Distinguished Alumni Hall. West Springfield has a proud history of graduating Spartans that have gone on to do great things from admirals and generals; astronauts; literary leaders and musicians; academic leaders; political leaders; business leaders galore and others.

A more formal effort will kick off in January, but West Springfield is asking you to contact the school with a brief description of any distinguished alumni you think should be recognized in this effort. If you know anyone that you think belongs in this group, please email the information to Ewfawsett@fcps.edu.
