We hope you had a safe and fun summer. It’s hard to believe the summer is officially over. Time seems to be flying by so quickly and so many of us are finding our lives are a little out of balance. Whether figuring out work schedules, school schedules or even how or when to schedule a vacation, life can feel a little more complicated right now. We hope this newsletter can provide some insight and tips to help restore balance to your life and body. If you’re feeling a little out of balance give us a call to book your next appointment. What Are The Twisties?

What are the Twisties? I had never heard of the twisties before watching a super fit, highly trained athlete, Simone Biles, basically have a panic attack mid air during the Olympics! I heard another athlete describe the twisties as "getting lost in space and time". It was a frightening thing to watch and even more shocking that she had to withdraw from the Olympics and sit out of something she had trained to perfect for years. Eventually, with the right self-care and support, she was able to come back and take the Bronze Medal in, of all things, the Balance Beam! As surprising as this was, I have been noticing that many of our folks have been experiencing their own version of the Twisties and feeling like their lives are out of balance. How many of you are feeling the following:

*losing a sense of time;

*feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed;

*finding it difficult to do normal activities or feeling like you can't take on anything else;

*feeling like your is mood off;

*feeling exhausted and/or your sleeping patterns are off.

Simone really gave us a moment to contemplate how an elite athlete can handle feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. She gave us all insight on how to heal ourselves even at inconvenient moments in our lives. Not only was she honest with herself about what she could do while the world was watching, but she remained engaged with her team, enjoyed the rest of the Olympics, worked behind the scenes with her trainers and therapists to process what was happening to her, and when she was feeling safe and ready, she rejoined the World Stage and went home a winner. How can Simone’s experience help us during these challenging times?

We are currently in the Late Summer Season according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The Late Summer Time is about finding balance. It is specifically about the Earth Element and the Spleen/Stomach channel. This is a perfect time to focus on ways to get grounded, take a moment to rest, take stock of how you really feel, digest everything that you have emotionally and physically been "taking" on, surround yourself with your team to help you rebalance and get back to your own Life Stage. You may not have to get back on an actual balance beam but finding ways to balance your life in a way that keeps you safe and healthy can be overwhelming. Below is more information about how to support the Spleen Stomach Channel and restore balance in your life. Late Summer:

The Season of Nuturing and Transformation

Organs Systems involved: Spleen and Stomach - Digestive System. How to receive and process what we take in both emotionally and physically.

Element: Earth. How to keep balanced, grounded and make the most of what the Earth has to offer.

Tissue or area of the Body: Muscle Health. How we can move through the world. Are you exercising and moving your body? Have you checked your Vitamin D levels recently?

Emotion: When out of balance – Worry or Over-thinking. How to find emotional balance so that you can be more sympathetic, empathetic and compassionate - to others and to yourself. It is the ability to give and receive caring. When the SP/ST Channel is out of balance, there are feelings of being overwhelmed and feeling lonely. It can show up as overthinking and being unable to shut your brain down especially when trying to fall asleep at night. It can also lead to feeling exhausted even if you find yourself sleeping for 10-12 hours. Meditation using mantras, guided imagery, or prayer beads can come in handy to occupy your brain while you focus on rejuvenating your body and spirit.

Taste or Flavor: Sweet. When SP/ST is deficient, cravings for sweets or carbs dominate. What the body is really needing is energy. Try eating foods that take a longer time to grow in the earth - sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, squash, pumpkins, whole grains that release their energy slowly and don't spike your glycemic index. Avoid processed foods and highly refined sugars.

Color: Yellow. Again, eating foods that have the yellow/orange color like squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, and whole grains. You can also work with crystals like citrine, sapphire, topaz, tourmaline, and transparent opal or wear clothes that have the yellow color.

Schizandra Dreams – Treats insomnia and influences dreaming; may lessen the severity of sleep apnea, used for nighttime cough. Acts as a calming sedative for daytime agitation, anxiety attacks, and palpitations or for substance withdrawal.

Adrenosen- Addresses burn-out, especially when accompanied by aching, pain, and digestive disturbances. Restores energy, sense of well-being, and mental acuity. Supports the adrenal, pituitary and thyroid glands. Good overall Yin tonic.

Shen-Gem- Treats insomnia, nervousness, and anxiety accompanied by palpitations, fatigue, poor appetite, pallor, dry skin, excessive sweating, and loss of memory. Can be used as a long-term formula for people with immune disorders, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain.
