EVENT VOLUNTEERING

There are many ways to volunteer, and you don’t need to retire to begin your community journey.

Take Mike Dzurnak of Strongsville. Formerly a civil engineer for the Department of Transportation, Mike is now busy performing consulting work as an inspector/engineer. His time to volunteer is limited, but he makes the most of it, having done so for the past four years.

Through Encore Cleveland, Mike was suggested to connect with Greater Cleveland Volunteers.

In Mike’s situation, he prefers to do the event opportunities, meaning special or yearly events where he needs to not commit to volunteering on a regular basis. He’ll generally volunteer for night or weekend events. In fact, some of Greater Cleveland Volunteers bigger events require many volunteers to cover the operations. You may have seen him at Night at the Races, St. Malachi’s Parish Trick or Trunk event, a museum fundraiser, or most recently, the Cleveland Pickle Fest®.

Mike is very enthusiastic about continuing to volunteer. “Can you imagine if more people would do it – even just a few? It would be great.” Talking with people at the events, Mike finds it’s a small world and has discovered many community connections. He has actually run into some neighbors and friends volunteering at the same events! A few others he has run into multiple times and has now become friends with.

“My hope is that people see this article and understand that they can volunteer on their own terms.”
