Act TODAY to Support Comprehensive Gun Reform

Contact your State Representative and State Senator TODAY to call for an immediate hearing for HD4220, An Act Modernizing Firearm Laws.

We are not immune to gun violence in Massachusetts. In the first 18 days of July alone, eight people have been killed and 18 injured by firearms across the Commonwealth, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Representative Michael Day of Stoneham, Chair of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary, briefed us Monday night on his newly-filed omnibus bill, An Act Modernizing Firearm Laws, HD4220. View the recording here. Chair Day filed the 141 page bill--the most sweeping legislation since the gun reform bill of 2014–on June 26.

We need the legislature to move this bill forward by scheduling a public hearing as quickly as possible. The opposition to this bill is organized, loud and fierce. It is critical that legislators, even though they are pro-gun control, can count the number of constituents on the other side. Each of us needs to contact our state representative and state senator now via email or phone in support of this bill. Find them here.

Suggested script: “Please act swiftly to schedule a public hearing for HD4220, An Act Modernizing Firearm Laws, and report it favorably out of committee. The League of Women Voters of Massachusetts believes that curbing gun violence is a critical matter of public safety, public health, and public confidence. With each day that passes, more lives are lost to gun violence. We urge you to take swift action towards passage of this comprehensive firearms omnibus bill. Thank you.”

Feel free to personalize your email by adding why this bill is important to you. Remember to include your name and complete street address within your email.

LWVMA Convention adopted Preventing Gun Violence as an Action Priority for this biennium. We encourage all League members to contact their legislators and to share the action with their personal networks. We need to flood the legislature with voices supporting this bill to counteract the actions of the gun lobby.
