Contact your state representative and state senator TODAY and ask them to support an override to Governor Healey’s reduction in the Civics Project Trust Fund line item.
The Civics Project Trust Fund provides grants to school districts for professional
development and curriculum development as well as funding for the Massachusetts
Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to support schools in
implementing non-partisan student-led civics action projects. As you know, LWVMA
worked diligently to pass the Civics Education bill in 2018 as part of the MA Civic
Learning Coalition under the leadership of education specialist Karen Mazza.
The Trust Fund received $2 million in FY’23. The FY’24 budget sent to Governor Healey included funding at $2.5 million. Governor Healey reduced the funding to $1.5 million.
The MA Civic Learning Coalition believes this decrease would:
-
Provide fewer Community Grants for local school systems to develop and implement quality civic education programming
-
Cut back the Professional Learning Program, a statewide system for professional development for K-12 teachers
-
Decrease access to Curriculum Resources and Support for civic education
