July 23, 2024
Dear Brooks Community,
The academic office has been working on course placements and scheduling for new and returning students. Starting today, students will be able to view the courses that they will be enrolled in this academic year and begin ordering books and materials. Below, you will find information about viewing student courses, ordering books and signing into OnBrooks, as well as some additional reminders.
Viewing Student Courses
As of July 23 at 4 p.m., students and their families can see a list of enrolled courses in the Course Requests area of OnBrooks. More instructions are below. Before you look at that list of courses, please note the following:
-
Enrolled courses (those that say “Enrolled” next to them) are officially added to your slate for the fall. You should purchase books and materials for those courses. You should check to see whether any of those courses have summer work, and begin that work at your convenience. In some cases, a course may not show up as enrolled, or may show as “Pending” or “Approved.” Those are not confirmed and you should not purchase books or materials for any course that does not show as “Enrolled.”
-
Year-long courses will carry through to Semester 2.
-
Semester-long elective courses in all departments (courses like Women in Literature, Human Rights History, Honors Biotechnology, Introduction to Computer Science, Acting for Stage and Screen, etc.) for Semester 1 are confirmed if they show as “Enrolled.” Semester 2 courses have not yet been scheduled.
-
Final class schedules with courses, teachers and class times will be available in mid-August. We will send another communication when that information is ready for viewing in OnBrooks.
Students, when you look at your courses, we hope that you see primarily courses that were your top choices. However, we know that some of you did not receive your top choice and might want to make a change.
-
If a top choice elective in any department was not available, the scheduling software automatically assigned an alternate in the same department if an appropriate alternate was available. In some cases, no appropriate alternate was available. We are happy to work with students to add or adjust courses; submit any requests via the Course Questions Form.
-
Nearly all changes to elective courses across departments will require being on a waitlist. Students should submit questions and requests through the Course Questions Form. All requests for course and level changes will be placed on randomized waitlists and reviewed during the week of August 5. This is not a first-come, first-served process. If you are traveling and need some time to submit your request, don’t fret! Remember that students may change their courses through the first two weeks of the semester.
-
Students and families may also use the Course Questions Form for any other questions about their courses along the way, and a member of the academic office team will respond within a few days.
Students: Log into OnBrooks with your student account and click “Course Requests” from the My Day landing page. Courses listed in the “Selected Requests” area are courses you are presently set to take in the fall.
Parents/Guardians: Log into OnBrooks with your parent account and select the name of your student in the upper left of your OnBrooks menu. Select the “Course Requests” option. Courses listed in the “Selected Requests” area are courses your student is presently set to take in the fall.
Ordering Books
As of today, the Brooks School bookstore through Follett is open! Click the “Shop Textbooks” button to get started. You can also find the link in OnBrooks at Groups > Summer Reading & Assignments. A few notes:
- If you are ordering a Spanish textbook with a Supersite code, only new texts will come with a code. If you buy a used text, you must contact the publisher directly to purchase a new code. The World Language department uses the same texts for honors and non-honors courses.
- If you have requested a course for which no textbooks are available through Follett, such as Geometry, that is by design. There are no texts for that course.
- You may elect to deliver books to campus for pickup when you arrive. Please enter 1160 Great Pond Road, North Andover, MA 01845 as the shipping address at checkout. However, if you are taking an AP course that requires summer work, you might want to receive them earlier, at home.
- Students receiving a financial aid book stipend will receive an email from Associate Director of Admission and Director of Financial Aid Patrick Foley with book ordering information.
If you elect to order books outside of the Follett bookstore, ISBN numbers for the exact publications can be accessed from inside the Follett bookstore for use elsewhere. Brooks School does not maintain relationships with other vendors but many materials are available from a variety of sellers.
Other Reminders
The following are reminders of recent notifications to students and/or parents and guardians.
-
As I mentioned in our June letter, students should check OnBrooks > Groups > Summer Reading & Assignments for the most up-to-date reading and classwork for assigned classes, including information on our All Community Read. Teachers of AP courses, in particular, expect students to complete the summer work before arriving on campus in September, so students should prioritize getting the required materials for those courses. If you have questions about course content, please refer to our Course Catalog for 2024-2025.
- Summer Magnus forms, ImPACT testing and student health information are due August 1. Parents can find information and links in OnBrooks > Groups > Summer Registration.
-
Student email and OnBrooks account credentials were sent directly to new students earlier in the summer. Students may contact Director of Technology Ryan Dobbins for questions about email and may contact Registrar and Director of Administrative Computing Lisa Saunders for questions about OnBrooks.
Again, please be in touch with any course questions using this form. We hope you enjoy the ample time remaining in the summer and we look forward to seeing you in September!
Sincerely,
Currie Joya Huntington
