Principal News
Hello Académie Lafayette Families!
Dear families,
Many of you might not know, but I often ride my Vespa to school. It's a great vehicle, saves gas,
I enjoy embarrassing my children because of my matching helmet, and most of all I get to truly embrace the changing seasons. Fall is upon us -- and with that comes the time of year when it's cool in the morning and warmer during the day. Please remind your student to keep track of his/her sweaters and hoodies. It's easy to forget them on the playground or in class and then they wind up in the Lost and Found box. If you are missing an outer garment please check there before buying another one. Or, if you need a sweater or sweatshirt, check the uniform closet. Thanks to Diane Rizzo, we have fully stocked uniform closets with gently used uniform clothing for your child.
I also wanted to give you an update on the installation of new playground equipment at both campuses. We have been delayed because of scheduling changes with the installers and rain. The date is now the weekend of October 29-30. Thank you for your patience.
Have a great weekend!
Mme Houfaidi,
Oak Principal

Launching AL Choir & Band
Mr. Combreas, our new Music Teacher at Oak, is looking forward to launching the
AL Choir. Choir meetings will take place on Wednesdays, from
3:45 pm to 4:45 pm. Mr. Combreas would like to see at least 20 students join in this creative operation. Arrangements will depend upon the number of students participating. So, if you are interested in participating in this years Choir adventures, please fill out the registration form distributed in the classroom and ask your child to return it to the homeroom teacher.
Mr. Combreas also noticed that several students are interested in
learning to play together as a band. He is willing to meet these students on Mondays, from
3:45 pm to 4:45 pm. This club is not aimed at learning how to play an instrument; the focus will be to practice playing together as a band. Again, arrangements will depend upon the number of students wanting to participate. Please fill out the registration form distributed in the classroom and ask your child to return it to the homeroom teacher.
For both activities parents must be able to pick up their child at
4:45 pm.

Pop Tabs Together
Irene Dye (2nd grader) and her family work together to collect tabs for Académie Lafayette's community service project. Irene donated a HUGE bag of tabs to help our local Ronald McDonald House.
You can help out too: just bring in your tabs or old keys and drop them in the bucket outside of Mme Beth's office at Cherry.
Last year we collected 6 buckets - help us reach our goal of 6 or more this year!
To find out more, go to www.rmhckc.org.
(NOTE: You can also put pop tabs in the bucket in the main hall at Oak.)

From The Nurses
Dear parents,
In an effort to help share the "big picture" of student wellness with our community we would like to be able to periodically notify our families of the number of cases of health-related issues like influenza, strep, and lice, but
we need your help to be able do so
! Please call or email the nurse at your campus when your child has
any
communicable illness or condition to help us have the most up-to-date information. Please include the following information: your child's name, grade, teacher, whether or not the illness or condition has been diagnosed by a medical professional, and if applicable, when your child started treatment for the condition.
In the past week, we have been informed of the following issues in our community, not all of which have been confirmed by a medical professional:

Hand, Foot, and Mouth

*This is not a complete picture of health at AL, as many cases do not get reported to the nurses.
Next, If you haven't done so already, please return your student's HealtheKids permission form. We try to make sure we get a form back from every student so we are sure our families were aware of this opportunity. If you do not want your child to participate, please write your student's name on the front page of the form and "refused" or "declined" so we can mark them off as having responded. These health screenings are free of charge and include vision and hearing screenings, which are not typically done at the pediatrician's office. They are conducted by a team of highly trained nurses and results are sent home in a sealed envelope upon the completion of the screenings at that campus.
Last, but definitely not least, we would like to inform you of our updated nursing practice regarding lice at Académie Lafayette. This change in practice is based on recommendations from experts in the field and has been reviewed by AL Administration as well as the Conseil d'Ecole. The document has been posted on the AL website.
P
lease remind your children to avoid head-to-head contact with each other, as that is how most cases of lice are spread. Our younger students have a harder time with this, and thus tend to have a higher incidence rate of lice, so please check your student's head frequently for signs of lice. You may also consider sending your child to school with their hair pulled back in a ponytail, braid, or bun, to try to minimize risk of transmission to or from other students.
As always, please feel free to contact the nurse at your child's campus with any questions or concerns. Thank you for helping us keep our community healthy!

Painless Fundraising
It's not only painless, it's profitable! Last year our Painless Fundraising efforts helped raise over $3,000 for the general fund at Académie Lafayette. Imagine how our children are benefiting from our efforts! Below is a list of Painless Fundraising opportunities. The committee challenges you to help make this our most profitable year yet. Send labels in to your teacher at any time. We will collect them in November and in May. The class that has turned in the most labels will have a party at the end of the school year. Here is a list of all the painless fundraising opportunities at AL:

AL Boys Soccer Excels Again
Congratulations to the Middle School Boys Soccer Team as they were victorious once again yesterday by a score of 12 - 0. Our young men had been invited to a friendly game between AL and the Calvary Lutheran School Boys Soccer Team (grades 5 - 8). Our gracious hosts were very generous to allow our children and families to use their facilities as to have an extra game to hone the boys' skills. We are very appreciative of their efforts to make us feel welcome and hope to meet again soon.
After observing 4/5 games this year, it is clear that these players are developing great cohesion as a team. AL had a multi-pronged attack with 7 different players scoring, led by Jack Tootle with 4 goals. Sam North and Benjamin Robinson also had 2 goals apiece. Numerous players were also involved in some sterling passing to set up the goals. Equally as important was the stellar team defense led by Andrew Robinson. The defenders are learning the importance of holding one's position and trusting their teammates to make the defensive stop.
Thank you to all of the parents and families who came to cheer for our boys, and thank you to the continued coaching excellence of Mr. Dieng, Mr. Djiba, and Mr. Seydi.

Wins For Volleyball Team
The AL Volleyball team defeated Frontier to capture their first win of the season Thursday, September 22nd. The team swept Frontier winning all three games, never allowing Frontier to take the lead. Katie Riffle led the squad overall with double-figure scoring 13 service points in a row followed by Sera Von Rautenfeld with 8 and Isabella Dougherty with 5 service points. The team's dominance allowed our less experienced girls an opportunity to show their stuff on the court. The game was dominated by points converted from the team's robust serving.
Tuesday, September 23rd AL Volleyball easily outplayed and outscored Alta Vista sweeping all 3 games, 25-16, 25-8, 15-9. Sera Van Rautenfeld was on fire, scoring 17 service points across all three games, a record for this season. Rayna Bowman contributed 9 service points, 2 kills, and 4 sets allowing her teammates to have 2 successful kills as well. The team moves to a 2-1 record and are set to face off next week with Kipp (
10/4 at 5 pm) at Ewing Marion Kauffmann School. We hope to see you there!

What Are You Doing In My Swamp?
A lot, actually. Over the past 2 weeks, the 8th graders took turns investigating aquatic ecosystems first hand (as well as feet) funded by a Missouri Department of Conservation grant and PTSO funding.
Touring a water treatment plant, collecting waters samples for dissolved oxygen content, walking in spongy soil, snakes and bugs encounters as well as fishing allowed students to learn how vital swamps, wetlands and marshes are, whether they are man-made, inland or coastal.
Trying hard to establish balance against the effect of gravity was not an easy task and some of us were able to get free skincare and facials. Many moms and dads were also able to put their laundry detergent to the test and brag about it (or not).
