Summer School Fun: Juneteenth Edition

Dear AL Community,

Our week was a bit shorter than usual, but AL students grades K-8 were still engaged, taking active field trips to the Kansas City Zoo, the My Play Cafe, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the beautiful Lakeside Nature Center, and Hallmark’s Kaleidoscope. We finished up all of our puppet workshops with “What If Puppets,” and middle school students got some exercise at Skate City and a lot of historical learning at the World War I Museum. At Armour, middle school students in culinary class created their own recipes. We are currently rescheduling today’s Oak field trip to Kaleidoscope for class 3C to next week… stand by!

Next week is a full five days of school with more field trips. Keep your eye on the Cherry and Oak field trip calendars for “Swimsuit Needed” pool and spray-play days! All three campuses are having a new experience for students next week: KC Hockey will bring an “Introduction to Field Hockey” with several skills stations for students to cycle through. Please send your child in cool clothing and with a water bottle.

Summer transportation update: we are currently not accepting new riders for summer school. Please remember that non-riders are not allowed to ride home with friends using the bus. Currently bus riders also cannot change bus route to ride home with friends.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me. Bon weekend!

AL Insights

AL Volunteer Sign-Up Form

Exciting news for Académie Lafayette families! We are launching our new volunteer management system in order to make it easier for families like yours to get involved.

Ready to make a difference? Sign up today to be a part of our vibrant community and contribute to our shared success!

We are also looking for host families for our new interns and teachers. If you are interested, check the box on the form or reach out to Maaria Riaz at mriaz@academielafayette.org.

AL Community Business Directory

We are compiling a directory of businesses associated with the Académie Lafayette community - business owned by current families, alumni, community supporters, etc.

If you own a business and would like to market your efforts to our community - share a product, increase traffic, provide a discount or simply get the word out about what your business offers - please fill out this form. Please submit one form per business.

Our goal is to publish the first directory in August.

Summer School Meals Information

Parents can now add money to their student's meal account through Tyler. Please log on, go to meal service using the menu on the left, click on "Online Payment" at the bottom right of the screen, and follow the prompts.

Cherry parents: all students can eat breakfast and lunch for free all summer long. The campus qualified for the "seamless summer" program based on census information.

Oak & Armour parents: to apply for the free and reduced meals program, click here.

DO NOT click on Register or Login. If necessary, select your language in the upper left corner using the three little horizontal bars. Enter ACADEMIE in the district field and select Académie Lafayette. Follow the prompts to complete the application. Contact dgould@academielafayette.org with any questions.

24-25 School Supplies

Each spring, the PTO coordinates a school supply sale. Kits are created based on our teachers’ supply lists and are available for parents to order in advance. Parents receive an early bird discount when they purchase through Yubbler in the spring. The PTO receives a portion of the proceeds as well as a credit for our social workers to use! The supplies will be delivered to your home.

Click here to view the lists and to purchase your school supplies now. You do not have to buy the whole kit. *The middle school lists have had significant updates this year.

Summer After-School Care Enrollment

If you are enrolling your child for the first time to our after-school program, please note that you will need to complete the full state application, which can also be found on our website, to enroll your child. This comprehensive application ensures that we have all the necessary information to provide the best possible care for your child during their time with us. If you have any questions or need assistance with the enrollment process, please call (816) 363-3819 or email afterschool@upperroomkc.org.

Host Families are Needed for our 2024-2025 Interns!

Are you ready for an exciting opportunity that could enrich your household in ways you have never imagined?

Consider hosting an AL intern for a semester or year!

Interns are selected from universities across French-speaking countries to spend the school year supporting our youngest learners at Cherry and Oak. We meticulously vet their resumes and references to ensure they are a match for our school community.

As part of the program, interns are matched with host families who open their hearts and homes to these wonderful individuals. In return, host families experience the joy of language immersion and cultural exchange within their own household.

For more information please take a look at the following videos made by last year’s interns: FAQ and Experience Video.

Hosting an intern isn't just about sharing your space – it is about fostering connections that can last a lifetime.
