SUMMER MISSIONS REPORT - AUGUST 18

This Sunday, August 18, from 5:00 – 6:30 PM, there will be a Missions dinner cooked by Hillary and the Fellowship Team, with dessert provided by the Missions Team. We will recognize those who have read Missionary Biographies in the last six months, and hear reports from the various mission trips from this year.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY TEAM

As we prepare for our ministry initiatives to begin this fall, the Children's Ministry Team welcomes you to join them in serving the children of our Church and community through the Worship Center, Sunday School, and our outreach Bridge Nights. There are numerous areas and time commitment levels. Contact our Children's Ministries director, Catie Lumpkin at catie@avpc.org for more information.

PICTORIAL DIRECTORY

Many of you have requested a pictorial directory, and we’re excited to announce that one will be available this September! We’d like to feature family photos in this directory, and we need your help to make that happen. Here are several ways to submit your family photo for the directory:

1. August 18 Photo Booth: There will be a photo booth in the Welcome Center during the Sunday School hour on August 18 (9:45 – 10:45 AM). Simply come and smile for the camera, and Caroline will submit your photo to the office!
2. Submit a Photo: If you already have a family photo you love, you can send it directly to anna@avpc.org. You can also drop a hard copy by the office for us to scan.
3. Upload Your Own: You can log in to your CCB account and upload a photo directly to your profile! If you need help logging in, please contact the church office.

Please submit your photos by Friday, August 23. Thank you for helping us produce an excellent directory this fall!

FRIENDSHIP PARTNERS

The world has come to the United States and to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, which has 1097 international students from 83 countries. You can be a friend, meeting only once or twice a month, to an international student or other international living in the area through the Friendship Partner program that AVPC has in collaboration with Briarwood Presbyterian Church. Friendship Partner orientation is August 22 for those who have not gone through an orientation, and applications are due by August 29. YOUNG ADULT TRIVIA NIGHT - AUGUST 22

Join young adults from Birmingham PCA churches for dinner and trivia hosted at Altadena on Thursday, August 22, 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Dinner from Waldo’s Chicken will cost $10. Email Blake Harris (blake@avpc.org) to sign up. 

CHANCEL CHOIR INVITATIONAL - AUGUST 25

We encourage you to attend our Chancel Choir Invitational on Sunday, August 25, from 5:00 – 6:30 PM. The choir will learn a choral anthem for September. You will also be introduced to some of the 2024 Christmas music. Childcare is available and no audition is necessary. If you would like more information, contact Heather Sommer (heather@avpc.org).

COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE - SEPTEMBER 8

On Sunday, September 8, we are hosting a blood drive through Lifesouth Community Bloodcenters. The bus from Lifesouth will be in Altadena Park from 12:45-7:00 PM. No appointment is necessary, but you may schedule a time on the Lifesouth website.

WOMENS FALL BIBLE STUDY

Join your AVPC sisters this Fall as we study through Exodus. Monday studies will begin on September 9 at 2:30 PM in the Conference Room. Wednesday studies will begin on September 11 at 9:00 AM in the Parlor, and 7:00 PM at the home of Lea Anne Parker. Friday studies will begin on September 13 at 1:00 PM at the home of Judy Bates. BABY SHOWER - SEPTEMBER 9

The women of AVPC are hosting a baby shower on September 9, at 7:00 PM, at the home of Vicki Barber to honor Nina Ogden. You can contribute online with THIS LINK or in the collection envelope in your Sunday school class. Please designate “baby shower” in the memo line of your check.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2024

Although we did not send any delegates to this year’s General Assembly in Richmond, VA, we are thankful for the work of our denomination. Bryan Chapell, the PCA’s Stated Clerk, has provided THIS SUMMARY of the Assembly’s actions.

The Prayer Prompt bookmarks from the Prayer Ministry Team are now available for use. Pick up your copy from the Parlor, the Welcome Center, or by following THIS LINK. Each month there will be a specific theme and Scripture verses for you to use in praying for the Pastoral Transition Process. The theme for the month of August is Love.

We express our heartfelt condolences to Brooke DeRieux on the passing of her father, Glenn Bicknell, and John McCary on the recent passing of his nephew and sister. 

MISSIONS NEWS

OUR MISSIONARIES OF THE WEEK are Matt and Rachel Allison. Matt serves as Senior Director of Operations for Serge, leading the Home Office in assisting more than 300 missionaries serving in over 25 countries. Matt lives in West Philadelphia with his wife Rachel and their two children, Clark and Helen.
