Thank you for your membership and commitment to the AVMLA! Your leadership team has several exciting announcements!
Firstly, we have updated the mission statement of the AVMLA, to be more inclusive of all members of the veterinary team and support their legal and business needs, as it specifically relates to veterinary medicine.
The AVMLA is dedicated to be:
1. The non-bias education of the veterinary community on evolving issues in
veterinary medicine
2. A civil platform for the productive exchange of ideas.
We feel that these statements are a great start for us to rally behind moving the association forward into our next 30 years. We pledge to be the preeminent source to provide information for the veterinary community and serve as the place for discussion and engagement on veterinary legal matters.
Using these points as direction, Debra Hamilton (your president elect) and I will begin the process of re-engaging the membership with information and designing a conference that is steeped in discussion and idea exchange for evolving legal issues in veterinary medicine.
One of the reasons for the shift to a discussion-based format was the success of the Compounding roundtable at the 2016 meeting and the full day telemedicine panel discussion at the 2017 meeting. Both of these discussions received high marks from attendees and the telemedicine panel was one of the most well attended in recent AVMLA meeting history.
This year's meeting looks to be a blockbuster! The theme is "
Practicing Veterinary Medicine in the 21
st
Century - Looking at Telemedicine, Corporate Practices and Human/Animal Care"
. A very special guest, Dr. Bernie Rollins will speak on Veterinary Ethics. Lastly, AVMA State Relations will give us a overview on what is happening on the state legislative front.
In summary - your leadership team will work to deliver more information through the newsletter and listserve, as well as provide, and additional opportunities like webinars. As always, we will continue to design meetings that are relative, timely and multifaceted, attempting to engage all sides of the issue. We will allow the presentation of the perspective in a neutral forum and allow civil discussion.
From you, we need your feedback, ideas and contributions. We want to make this your organization for veterinary law related ideas exchange. Thank you and stay tuned for good things to come. I look forward to seeing you in Denver on July 14-15, 2018.

Pet Rays & Horizon Radiology, LLP, v. LogicRad, Inc. & VDIC, Inc.

Though highly regulated, and sometimes illegal, the lure to take kickbacks can seem insurmountable. As a prominent case points out, the practice can have several repercussions on a veterinarian's business, relationships and reputation. In a recent proceeding out of the Southern District of Texas, plaintiffs PetRays, LP ("PetRays") and Horizon Radiology, LLP ("Horizon") brought serious allegations against defendants LogicRad, Inc. ("LogicRad") and VDIC, Inc. ("VDIC"). The complaint focuses on the Radiographic Digital Converter (RDC), a machine which takes several high-resolution photographs of an X-Ray image in digital form. The images can then be uploaded to providers of veterinary telemedicine services. Because some alternatives to the RDC are much more costly and inefficient, it is one of the most widely used radiograph devices in the veterinary industry.
Defendant VDIC is one of the few providers of veterinary telemedicine in the United States, a process highly used by smaller medical practices. As part of its telemedicine service, VDIC produces and sells VetMedStat software. When defendant LogicRad, a wholly owned subsidiary of VDIC, bought the RDC technology, LogicRad began loading all RDCs with VetMedStat software and allegedly offering "kickbacks" to distributors who referred veterinarians to VDIC consultants.
