Our Blue Hen team is proud and privileged to be the recipients of investment from NSF through the inaugural Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program.

NSF Awards $9.75M to 15 Teams to Pioneer Bio-inspired Solutions
The National Science Foundation is investing $9.75 million to 15 multidisciplinary teams (many of which are AURP Member institutions) to pioneer innovative technologies and solutions addressing key societal and economical challenges inspired by biological systems. Learn more.

VentureWell Seeks Analytical Lab Testing Vendors for Detection of
COVID-19 only or in combination with Flu A and/or Flu B
VentureWell is seeking qualified testing labs that can perform analytical studies to support the required analytical testing for FDA authorization of assays for the detection of COVID-19 only, or COVID-19 in combination with Flu A and/or Flu B. Assays have been developed by third-party teams under the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics and/or Independent Test Assessment Programs and may be supported by VentureWell under federal awards. Labs may be qualified to perform all or a subset of studies listed in the deliverables table on a per-project basis. The number of projects assigned to a selected lab may vary and will be determined on a per-project basis. Learn more.

Hillsborough County (FL) Seeks Master Developer for Land Surrounding Museum of Science and Industry Near the University of South Florida
The Board of Hillsborough County (FL) Commissioners has approved a Request for Proposal asking developers to submit their plans for the redevelopment of the 67-acre site surrounding the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), located near the University of South Florida (USF) campus. Hillsborough County is seeking creative and competitive proposals from experienced and qualified master developers with a track record of mixed urban projects. Submissions are due in late February 2024. The Board plans to select the top-ranked master developer in Summer 2024. Learn more.

George Washington University (new AURP member) hosted a UIDP workshop on "Assessing and Building Innovation Ecosystems." Many AURP members and sponsors attended, including GWU representatives, Maryland TEDCO, NSF, TUFF (with Kevin Byrne moderating a panel), Children’s National Innovation Campus, UMD Discovery District, KPMG, McAllister & Quinn, Cambridge Innovation Center, SAS Institute, VA Tech, Redbrick and AURP's Chief Strategy Officer, Brian Darmody. The event was held in The Square, a multi-tenant facility managed by Tishman Speyer in the Penn West Equity and Innovation District near GWU's main campus. | |

Gateway Research Park has announced Paul Meyer has been named its new Executive Director. Meyer, who retired as Executive Director of the NC League of Municipalities in December 2021, has more than 25 years of non-profit leadership experience with a focus on growing organizations, developing talent, optimizing operations and achieving positive financial performance. "I look forward to working with the Gateway Board, NC A&T State University, UNC Greensboro, and the community to continue to advance the unlimited potential of Gateway and its future,” said Meyer. Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science has been awarded $8.1 million from the state of Illinois to bolster existing training infrastructure, including renovation of general clinical skills labs, modernization of the gross anatomy lab and purchase of state-of-the-art simulation equipment. The grant will also pay for additional development and buildout of RFU’s Innovation and Research Park (IRP). RFU research labs and six disease-based centers occupy two-thirds of the IRP, with the remaining third available to healthcare industries and startups. Read more. | | |
Pivot Bio, a sustainable agriculture company, opened its new 36,000-square-foot Customer Success Center in the heart of the Iowa State University Research Park. The facility underscores the company's commitment to developing microbial nitrogen solutions that allow farmers to reduce their reliance on synthetic fertilizers. Pivot Bio, in partnership with ISU Research Park and Story Construction, invested $14 million to bring the vision to life. Read more. | |

AstraZeneca is establishing a new manufacturing facility in Montgomery County, MD (home to the Pinkney Innovation Complex for Science and Technology at Montgomery College). The company is investing $300 million in a facility where it will launch its cell therapy platforms in the U.S. for critical cancer trials and future commercial supply. The 84,000 square-foot space initially will focus on the manufacturing of CAR-T cell therapies to enable cancer clinical trials to be conducted globally. Plus, with close proximity to several universities, the location will enable effective talent recruitment. Read more. | | |
AlensiaXR, a technology spinoff from Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University (situated in the Cleveland Innovation District), has raised an unspecified amount to accelerate the development and delivery of its holographic learning platform that uses mixed reality to teach anatomy to medical students. The Series A equity raise was led by Sopris Capital. The funding round included investments from the Healthcare Collaboration Fund, co-managed by JumpStart Ventures and University Hospitals Ventures, both in Cleveland, along with the JobsOhio Growth Capital Fund in Columbus, Ohio. The Colorado School of Mines recently opened its new Labriola Innovation Hub building, celebrating the completion of the university’s state-of-the-art hands-on project-based learning and making headquarter: the Labriola Innovation District. A ribbon-cutting event took place on the school’s 150th Birthday. Labriola Innovation Hub is a 37,000-square-foot building that centralizes campus makerspaces; adds specialized classrooms; and incorporates much-needed student-project meeting spaces. Read more. | |
