MEMBERSHIP NEWS!

NOMINATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Officially named "The Phyllis Brennan Award", the prestigious VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD was created in 1992 by the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation and is presented annually to an outstanding volunteer for TCD. The recipient, nominated by the TCD Membership and selected by the TCD Board of Directors, will typically have served countless hours and be known to go "above and beyond" in their volunteerism and service to Tennis Competitors of Dallas.

Phyllis Brennan was a volunteer for MCB for over 20 years including being the ball girl chairman for the MCB sponsored Virginia Slims of Dallas. Phyllis passed in 1992 and this award honors her memory and love of tennis. This year's Volunteer of the Year will be announced at the Volunteer Luncheon in October. I hope many of you will complete the Volunteer of the Year award nomination form so we can honor an outstanding TCD volunteer.

TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP UPDATES

Hello TCD Captains! We hope everyone has had a wonderful summer and is as excited as we are to get back on court! As we prepare to begin our fall season, we wanted to share some of the updates with our newest award……THE TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD.

We had such great participation and feedback from the spring season, that it was a unanimous decision to make this award a permanent fixture within the TCD organization. We did make some updates and changes we’d like to share:

  1. This is a VOLUNTARY award, meaning you DO NOT have to participate if you do not wish to. If you choose not to participate in the rating of your opponents, your team will not be considered as a possible winner in your flight.
  2. When finalizing potential winners, comments are considered. We are looking at the OVERALL rating of each team and read each comment left in the comment boxes. This is extremely important in the event of a tie.

Let me share how I as a captain of three TCD teams have participated in this new process:

  1. At each match, when I gather my team to give out balls and tell them who their opponents will be, I tell them to start off with a 5 (which is the highest rating listed). If after the match, they feel that their opponents were pleasant, gave fair line calls, shook hands at the net and the overall experience was good, the line stays with a five.
  2. If there are issues, the points go down.
  3. I do that for each line played and at the end, I average the number.

This is YOUR system to use, and we want you to use it in a way that makes sense to YOU! The comments should pertain to the players, how they treated your team and how you felt playing them, NOT the facility, as the players cannot control things like how clean the bathroom was or if the courts were damaged or whether or not the pro shop had my favorite Gatorade flavor!

AGAIN, this is supposed to promote GOOD OVERALL TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP! We know this is an extra step and we deeply appreciate the efforts you as Captains give to your team as well as TCD! THANK YOU!

TCD WANTS YOU!!!

Calling ALL POTENTIAL VOLUNTEERS!!! It’s that time of year again where we are in the process of gathering the Nominating Committee to interview and select the slate of Officers for the 2025 TCD Board of Directors.

If you’ve ever thought, “I could get more involved with an organization that is so AWESOME”, then TCD wants YOU!!! Please reach out to me for more information, I LOVE TCD and would LOVE to share with you all the great

opportunities that we have available on the TCD Board.

Best Wishes for an AMAZING Fall Season!
