AUGUST 2023

Independence House News

It takes a village…

It’s a world of many people, and many are in need of help and support. It could be homelessness, hunger, poverty, lack of access to resources, or safety and recovery from intimate partner violence and trauma that people need. I think you’ll agree that it’s wonderful to know there are even more people in the world that help.

Independence House and each member of our staff are proud to be part of those helpers. It’s a humbling sense of achievement in seeing the success of those who accomplish their goals, become empowered, establish safety and security for themselves and their children, and enrich their livelihood to be independent and thrive.

We’re also proud that we have a community of people and organizations that partner with us in our efforts (see our Collaborative Partners page). While each of our community partners has their own established mission, our goals are united- WE HELP PEOPLE!

Teamwork is a powerful force! It not only fosters a sense of unity in our community, but establishes value and respect among each other. As a supporter of Independence House, YOU are part of our team. Your valued alliance has led to positive outcomes for survivors of domestic and sexual violence on Cape Cod. Your generosity is not just a number, but in fact contributes to the success of our clients’ challenging achievements.  Together, with YOU, and with our wonderful diverse and caring staff, and with the many partners we collaborate with in the community, we are proud to be part of that village it takes, and we thank you!

International Festival Aug 13

The Independence House International Festival is taking place on August 13th in collaboration with Health Imperatives' Immigrational Fair.

Due to the bad weather forecasted on July 16th, the festival was postponed. The rescheduled date, August 13th, now taking place at Aselton Park in Hyannis prompted a surprise collaboration.

Health Imperatives has united with Independence House to combine their Immigrational Fair with our International Festival. We are thrilled to be able to collectively maintain the missions of our festival and fair, and provide a collaborative space for the many non-profit organizations, sponsors and vendors that were planning on attending both events.

Please join us from 12:00-6:00pm on August 13th at Aselton Park for family fun activities, vendors, cultural food, live music and numerous non profit organizations providing information and resources.

Who will be there? Check out this list of great sponsors, non profits, vendors, and live musicians:

Board Recruitment

Shout Outs!

Thanks to Lovern Gordon and the Love Life Now Foundation

Thank you to Lovern Gordon and the Love Life Now Foundation for naming Independence House one of their 2023 beneficiaries of the year!  Independence House has been highlighted throughout the year and with great gratitude, benefited from the Foundation’s White Ribbon Night Gala in March; their 12th Heel-A-Thon event in June; and is the upcoming beneficiary of a Bedding Drive for DV Awareness that anyone regardless of location demographics can take part in. It is scheduled from September 6th through October 6th to support the Independence House confidential domestic and sexual violence shelter residence.

It was also a special treat last week when Lovern traveled to Cape Cod for an intimate meeting with Independence House Executive Director, Lysetta Hurge-Putnam and staff.

Male ambassadors at the 12th Heel-A-Thon that took place in Brockton, MA.

Chris Morin, Independence House Director of Prevention, Education and Outreach speaking at the White Ribbon Night Gala.

Thanks to Melissa Richard for running the Providence Marathon to benefit Independence House

While Melissa Richard was raising thousands of dollars for Independence House and Cape Cod survivors of domestic and sexual violence, she surely made her mark in Providence, Rhode Island. Melissa completed the Providence Marathon in 3:26:39! Not only that, Melissa placed 8th in her female age class of 165 runners, placed 29th of all female runners (655), and placed 188th of all the marathon runners (1,643). WAY TO GO MELISSA and THANK YOU!

Thanks to Forge Fitness

Thank you to the incredibly fit team at Forge Fitness in Sandwich during their "Sweat for a Cause" event that took place on June 15th. While they were sweating for a cause, they raised thousands of dollars for Independence House to assist survivors of domestic and sexual violence in our own neighborhoods throughout Cape Cod.

Thanks for a succesful golf tournament.

After a 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic, we were thrilled to be able to golf together again this past May. Thanks to Willowbend Golf Club for hosting our tournament! Thanks to the numerous sponsors, golfers, and business donors of incredible raffles and prizes. And, thanks to the many volunteers who helped make the event smooth, enjoyable and successful. We're looking forward to our next tourney in 2024.

Thanks to Sturgis Charter Public High School Students for helping with our clean-up day.

It was a beautiful day back in May to clean up the Independence House Hyannis main office property and we couldn't have done it without the incredible assistance of Sturgis seniors who helped us with their muscles and great attitudes. It also aided in the fulfillment of some of their graduation requirements and we wish them the best for future success.

Volunteering

Posters in the Community

Are you a business, library, financial institution, medical facility, gym, health center, faith-based institution, activity center, organization, school, hotel, restaurant, tavern, bar, entertainment venue, or any place on Cape Cod the public attends or visits? If so, we’ve got posters for you!

Independence House has created 2 poster opportunities (one focused for teens/one focused for adults) that have been thoughtfully designed to provide critical resources for anyone that needs to reach Independence House for help. Each poster is offered in a single combination of 3 languages (English, Portuguese and Spanish) and contains numerous options of how to be in touch with Independence House discreetly and confidentially.

Posters can be provided to any entity on Cape Cod (at no cost), and can be hung either in public spaces or discreet locations such as rest rooms, dressing rooms or locker rooms.

If you are interested in either adult or teen posters for your location, please reach out to Donna at donnag@indhouse.net and we will ensure the quantity and delivery.
