President's Message
Hi ASVCP!
I hope that there are signs of welcome change wherever in the world you are. In Auburn, the daffodils are up, reminding us that spring is coming. With the emergence of a new season, I would like to make you aware of some exciting changes for the ASVCP!
In keeping with our pledge for continuous improvement, the Executive Board has worked hard to update procedures and streamline processes. As part of this effort, we have made a few changes to our committee structure. First, we have continued the launch of the “Finance & Development Committee.” At the recommendation of the society’s financial advisor, we have formed this committee to help devise the Society’s long-term vision and advise the Executive Board on financial matters to ensure that the society is in good financial standing for years to come. It will be composed of two subcommittees: one focused on financial planning and the other focused on fundraising. Fundraising had previously been a task of the “Share the Future” Committee, which was also tasked with selecting the recipients of the Share the Future research and travel grants. The selection of those awards, and others, will be shifted to the newly formed “Awards Committee,” which will have oversight of effective, equitable, and transparent award processes and the honor of recognizing our deserving recipients.
In addition to these changes, the Executive Board is working to steward existing partnerships and develop new collaborations for the benefit of our society. We have extended our working relationships with our management company (The Rees Group) and our editor-in-chief (Dr. Wendy Sprague), and are updating our contract with Wiley, for continued production of our journal, Veterinary Clinical Pathology. Plans are underway for an amazing combined ACVP/ASVCP annual meeting in Seattle and our collegial relationship with the ESVCP continues to grow. The Technology & Innovations Committee (TIC) is reaching out to partners for a digital slide repository and our connection with Veterinary Laboratory Professionals (VLPs) has been strengthened, as a new webpage for this group is being developed.
As we continue to grow as a society, it is important that we maintain a growth mindset. Your Executive Board has a renewed spirit of organizational leadership, following the tenets of loyalty, obedience, and care. We appreciate that we were given your trust and are striving to secure the strong future of our society. However, we can only do this with membership support. Please consider getting involved. Now is the perfect time to volunteer for the Finance & Development Committee or the Awards Committee, consider Officer Nominations, or support our society’s mission to advance veterinary clinical pathology education worldwide through sponsorship. Our society’s future is bright! We look forward to shepherding in its next chapter.
With gratitude and excitement for things to come,
Melinda

Get To Know Your ASVCP Executive Board
|
|
My name is Ashleigh Newman, and I am excited to join the ASVCP Executive Board as Secretary-Elect!
I am an Associate Clinical Professor at Cornell, where I completed my residency. I love being an academic clinical pathologist – the variety, camaraderie with fellow faculty, and teaching future veterinarians and clinical pathologists. My husband, Wes, and I bleed Cornell Big Red, as we’re both alums of Cornell undergrad, were 4-year varsity swimmers, and now work at Cornell. He just wrapped up his ninth season as the Head Coach of the Cornell men’s swim team. We have two daughters: Alice (7) and Quinn (4), and an elderly Italian Greyhound mix named Millie. In my spare time, I enjoy reading fiction books, particularly crime and mystery, riding our Peloton, and watching my favorite shows (including Survivor nights with friends). In the last year, I’ve also been an assistant coach for my oldest daughter’s club swim team and have thoroughly enjoyed teaching in a different setting by helping kids learn how to swim and have fun while doing so. As a family, we love vacations to the beach or lake, and always make a point to spend a day at the waterslides (picture above from Saint Sauveur in Quebec).
What I have loved the most about volunteering with our wonderful society is meeting and forming lasting relationships with clinical pathologists from institutions across the US and beyond. And when I found out that I would get to learn ‘how to Secretary’ from the great Mark Johnson – it was an easy decision! In my brief time on the Executive Board thus far, it has been inspiring to see the care and dedication that this group exercises in guiding our society. I look forward to working on the EB, working on the EB, learning from my fellow officers, and serving our members.

Get To Know The Resident Liaison Group
|
|
The ASVCP Resident Liaison Group (RLG) is a way for residents to participate and have a voice in the ASVCP. The group is made up of clinical pathology residents from many different institutions. The RLG hosts virtual and in-person trainee events to foster communication between residents and promote resident education. Residents also have the opportunity to serve as resident members of ASVCP committees to provide resident input. The group is open to all trainees, and our contact form can be found on the ASVCP website if you are interested in joining us.
Sydney Hastain, DVM: Sydney is a 2nd year clinical pathology resident at North Carolina State University. She transitioned into residency after completing her DVM at Midwestern University. Sydney enjoys the steady and diverse cytology caseload and especially appreciates the teaching opportunities that residency offers. Participating in the RLG has been another highlight due to the connections she's made with clinical pathology residents across the country and the ASVCP committee experience. In her free time, she enjoys reading and attempting to be a valuable team member at trivia nights with her friends.
Betsy Murdock, DVM: Betsy is a 3rd year clinical pathology resident at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She attended veterinary school at Oklahoma State University before spending seven years in small animal general practice. Betsy enjoys seeing the variety of cases that come through the clinic but especially likes bone marrow samples. She has had a great experience serving as one of the co-chairs of the RLG, including the opportunity to meet residents from other programs and participate in ASVCP committees. When she isn’t busy with residency, Betsy enjoys hiking, baking and traveling.
The group is open to all trainees, and our contact form can be found on the

Announcing New Educational Materials For Teaching Quality Assurance To 4VMs And Residents!
- With the goal of giving our students/trainees an entry-level understanding of measurement uncertainty/error/QA to enhance patient safety, the QALS committee has modified CP teaching cases (mainly CBC/biochem material) to add QA/QC content
- Currently there are 21 pilot cases; please email Dr. Hooijberg (email below) if you are interested in using them
- Feedback on these cases and donation of more existing teaching cases for further QA content creation (1-2VM, 3-4VM, & resident level) are desired!
- Volunteers for collaboration in new case content creation are also WELCOME!
- Our goal is to have a repository of vetted cases on the ASVCP website for member use, similar to the ASVCP clinical chemistry case bank (our cases draw from these & other sources)
Sincerely, the ‘EMWG’ (educational materials working group) of the QALS committee, E. Hooijberg and J. Matlow
