ASOP Launches Ambassador Program

ASOP began a pilot Student Ambassador Program in January with the goal of positively promoting the school. The seven students selected to be Ambassadors will work on a volunteer basis to serve as liaisons between the current school community, prospective students and new students.

Student Ambassadors have the unique opportunity to receive training in public relations, communication and interpersonal skills. This quarter students were selected to participate in the program based on strong work ethic and discipline, strong desire to uphold a positive reputation for the ASOP student body, and have maintained above average classroom grades and DRC scores this school year.

Congratulations to ASOP's current Student Ambassadors: Ellie B., Hailey D., Deren E., Joe F., Grace G., Rori K. and Halie W.

Future participants who apply for the position will be selected based on the same merits. For more information on the program or to apply for a future position as a Student Ambassador, please contact the School Counselor, Hollyn Smith.

Snow Days Pile Up

ASOP was closed for five days in January due to inclement weather throughout the metropolitan area. Hopefully our snow days are behind us!

Red Fridays Support Our Kansas City Chiefs

Red was the name of the game at ASOP the Fridays before the Chiefs' playoff games and WINS! against the Buffalo Bills and then the Baltimore Ravens. With the Chiefs now Super Bowl bound, red fashion is still in season!

Battle of the Biologists

It wasn't quite the Great British Bake Off, but Liz's two Biology classes recently squared off to see which had the best recipe for creating pure ethanol, which is a biofuel.

The basic recipe has been around for thousands of years and uses yeast to ferment the sugars found in fruit or grain. The resulting mixture of fermented alcohol and water is then distilled to separate out the alcohol.

The two class recipes used varying types and amounts of carbohydrates, but were successful in producing ethanol. Some equipment damage was discovered and fixed by the fourth period students, so their ethanol was more pure and able to ignite. Third period's ethanol needed a little more tweaking for that to happen.

The students then tested their ethanol biofuel by successfully launching water bottle "rockets" in the classroom.

At the end of the day, students left with a greater understanding of the biological process of microbial fermentation.

Furry Paws Now Padding Around ASOP

Water bowls, dog beds and treats have materialized at ASOP as the school's two new therapy dogs have begun visiting and making themselves at home away from home. Abby is a 15-month-old Bernese Mountain dog, and Elton is a 2-year-old Aussie Shepherd/Lab mix. Both have met the requirements of ASOP's therapy dog program. The students were excited to finally meet Abby and Elton, and those furry paws are eliciting lots of smiles!
