President's Update - Frank A. Cordasco, MD
|
|
As we celebrate the Holiday Season and before 2018 comes to a close, I would like to share a few updates regarding some of the activities that your Presidential Line, Board and Committees have been working on.
The ASES Bylaws change establishing a new Fellow Member Category was approved by 87% of voting Active Members in a vote that concluded December 5
th
, 2018. The Membership Committee members under the leadership of Chair Joe Abboud and Co-Chair Ron Navarro have completed the proposed guidelines for the Shoulder and Elbow Fellow Membership Category. This new Fellow Member Category will allow an accepted fellow in an ASES recognized shoulder and elbow fellowship to apply to the Membership Committee for membership in the Fellow Member Category. In addition, an accepted fellow in a shoulder and elbow sports, arthroscopy, or hand fellowship, in which one of the faculty members is an Active ASES member, may also apply to the Membership Committee for membership in the Fellow Member Category. If accepted, the Fellow’s membership would terminate upon completion of the fellowship, at which time they may apply to the Membership Committee for advancement to a Candidate Member. This new Membership Category will allow young surgeons who have committed to subspecialty training in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery to engage with ASES at an earlier stage of their career.
As discussed at the Annual Meeting in Chicago, the ASES Presidential Line and Board formally established the Neer Circle in 2017 to provide a forum for advancing the ASES vision of being world leaders and educators of evidence-based and cost-effective shoulder & elbow care. This group has been assembled based on leadership and service within our Society in various capacities during the members’ careers. Membership in The Neer Circle is accessible to any member of ASES based purely upon his or her leadership and service to our organization.
The Neer Circle Task Force was formed earlier this year
to provide leadership for the Neer Circle and develop a strategic approach to the future development of the group.
The Neer Circle Taskforce is co-chaired by JT Tokish and Jed Kuhn and includes members Bob Arciero, Bob Burks, Dave Dines, Xavier Duralde, Neal ElAttrache, Peter Millett, Pat St. Pierre, Matt Provencher, Jim Tibone, and Jon Ticker. They created the following Mission Statement:
“The mission of the ASES Neer Circle is to recognize service and leadership, strategically support our Society, and advance the practice of shoulder and elbow surgery through consensus.”
The Task Force, as part of its annual mandate, has recently updated the Neer Circle Service Recognition Criteria.
The Neer Circle Taskforce has been actively working on the plans for the Inaugural Neer Circle Meeting that will take place on Wednesday October 16, 2019 just prior to the President’s Reception for the Annual Meeting in New York. This includes the production of an annual Consensus Statement by the Neer Circle on behalf of the ASES. The topic of the first of these statements regards “First Time Dislocation in the Young Athlete”.
The Neer Circle Taskforce sent the second round of Consensus Statement questionnaires to members of the Neer Circle December 6
th
, 2018. Completion of these questionnaires will facilitate the task of arriving at the Inaugural Meeting of the Neer Circle ready to finalize the consensus statement for publication in JSES. ASES will use the consensus statement as a valuable education tool and in support of our advocacy program, our communications with health systems, the government and insurance carriers. The goal is to produce ASES Neer Circle Consensus Statements, published annually in JSES, regarding topics that are of importance to our members and to shoulder and elbow surgeons globally. The first meeting will include a summary of the current consensus statement, an academic topic regarding Biologics in Shoulder Surgery and a discussion of the consensus topic for the 2020 Annual Neer Circle Meeting. The Neer Circle Taskforce will present the finalized consensus statement to the ASES membership at a scientific session during the Annual Meeting.
I would like to join Anna Quintanilla and Stella Gauthier in congratulating Christa Hagelberger, ASES Meetings and Education Coordinator and Steven Mlodoch, ASES Membership and Special Projects Coordinator upon the completion of their first year with ASES as of December 18, 2018! You have both performed in an outstanding fashion and we all appreciate your great work, which benefits the membership of ASES.

SOS and OBERD Systems
Now Available to ASES Members
|
|
In Spring 2018 the ASES leadership has carefully evaluated several data management web-based systems that would allow ASES members to collect and analyze patient reported outcome data as well as promote the use and improvement of PRO’s in clinical care. After a thorough evaluation, the ASES leadership chose 2 systems:
Surgical Outcomes System™ and OBERD
.
Each data management system brings a set of valuable benefits – members are invited to select the system that best addresses their practice needs. SOS if available free of charge while OBERD is being offered at a deeply discounted price. This is an excellent opportunity for our members and we hope that you will take full advantage of this benefit. To learn more about each system review the details below.
|
|
SOS is an orthopedic and sports medicine global registry which allows surgeons to collect and analyze patient outcomes and procedures. ASES members can incorporate SOS into their practice at no additional charge. The Surgical Outcomes System collaborates with societies and associations to unify their members’ patient outcomes collection for healthcare operations, research and publication, and validation of outcome measures. For more information follow the link below.

|
OBERD is a software system for physicians and hospitals to effortlessly collect the data they need to make better decisions about the care of their patients, and ultimately deliver better
health outcomes. The company powers some of the nation’s most prestigious hospital systems, including many high-ranked hospitals for orthopedics. OBERD’s goal is to pioneer a future of smart data collection to transform patient care and improve health outcomes. This data collection system is available to all members of the ASES at a discounted price. The ASES Multicenter Taskforce Study Groups will be using it for the multicenter studies. Young Investigator Initiative Grant Mentoring and Career Development Program
|
|
The United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) and Bone and Joint Canada are dedicated to increasing research of musculoskeletal diseases. To keep pace with the high and increasing burden of these diseases, a higher level of research performed by young investigators in the musculoskeletal diseases is required, and future levels of research assured. This is particularly important given the current environment for research funding, and academic careers. In response, the Young Investigator Initiative is a grant mentoring program providing early-career investigators an opportunity to work with experienced researchers in our field to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career.
To date 245 participants (60%) have successfully obtained $421 million in grants for 1,492 new musculoskeletal research studies. Participants consider this program instrumental to their success. They rate highly the one-on-one mentoring with experienced researchers, the opportunity for inter-disciplinary and peer-to-peer exchange, and collaborations established during workshops.
This grant mentoring program and career development program is open to promising junior faculty, senior fellows or post-doctoral researchers nominated by their department or division chairs seeking to pursue a career in clinical or basic research. It is also open to senior fellows or residents that are doing research and have a faculty appointment in place or confirmed. Basic and clinical investigators, without or with training awards, are invited to apply. Investigators selected to take part in the program attend two workshops, 12-18 months apart, and work with faculty between workshops to develop their grant applications. The unique aspect of this program is the opportunity for attendees to maintain a relationship with a mentor until their application is funded.
