President's Message Dear ASCLD Colleagues, I am happy to announce that we have four distinguished candidates running for the Board of Directors this year: Scott Ford, Midwest Regional Forensic Laboratory John Maciulla, Arizona DPS Southern Regional Crime Laboratory Henry Maynard, Defense Forensic Science Center Tate Yeatman, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Crime Laboratory Make sure you take some time to read through their biographies and visit with them at our symposium to get to know the candidates.   Also in this week’s CLM is the list of the applicants for membership as well as proposals for bylaws changes. We will be voting for all of these at the ASCLD Symposium. FORENSIC STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT NEEDS ASSESSMENT OF FORENSIC SCIENCES NamUs OPIOID AND EMERGING DRUG ISSUES IN TOXICOLOGY LABORATORIES

GAO Issues Report On Assessment of Forensic Algorithms Virginia Department of Forensic Science provided expertise for a technology assessment of forensic algorithms by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). A report capturing this information was developed and can be accessed here. It was found that algorithms can improve the speed and objectivity of investigations. Further, the authors developed three policy options that could help with such challenges: Increased training, standards and policies on appropriate use, and increased transparency.

Webinar on DNA Mixtures: A NIST Scientific Foundation Review The webinar presentation will consist of three parts: (1) reviewing the contents of and findings in the NISTIR 8351-draft report, (2) discussing feedback received up to that point in the public comment period, and (3) providing an opportunity for interested parties and stakeholders to ask additional questions or seek clarification on the draft report.

ANAB Trainings With the ability to reach wider audiences, we are expanding offerings of current courses in Spanish.  The following courses will be available live online in Spanish:  Forensic Technical Assessor  Forensic ISO/IEC 17025 Internal Auditor  Risk-based Thinking for Forensic Service Providers   We are also excited to introduce our courses:oratories and Inspection: Basic Statistics for Laboratories and Inspection Bodies. This course will introduce basic statistical techniques for collecting, organizing, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data. Participants will strengthen their knowledge base of statistical techniques and their application to ISO/IEC 17020 and ISO/IEC 17025, and build confidence in the validity and reliability of their results. More..
