Challenges in Seismic Retrofit of Iconic Structures
July 2024 By STRUCTURE magazine In Articles, Feature
The seismic rehabilitation of York Hall at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) demonstrates the complexities of modernizing aging iconic structures in earthquake-prone regions while preserving their historical significance. Built-in 1966 and known for its distinctive mid-century modern architecture, York Hall faced significant seismic risks due to its original design features, which did not meet current safety standards.
The UC Seismic Safety Policy requires retrofits to meet specific seismic performance levels and address hazards such as falling building components. For York Hall, this involved preserving historic architectural elements while upgrading the building to modern seismic standards. Key challenges included ensuring the building remained operational during renovations and balancing various priorities such as seismic safety, historical preservation, and cost management.
The successful completion of the York Hall retrofit, which won an NCSEA award, resulted in significant cost savings and created a model for future seismic retrofits. Key takeaways to consider include the importance of an integrated design team, effective communication, and the ability to balance technical, historical, and operational requirements in seismic upgrades. More details can be found in the article linked below.

Our group, in an effort to become a useful venue for Utility and Surveying professionals, has been organizing presentations and luncheons for years attended by local engineers and surveyors. One of our goals is to support local students who have chosen to focus on the utility and/or surveying field by awarding scholarships. The latest one was presented to Alexandra Roche, a senior at UCF pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. We will be giving out our next scholarship in the second part of 2024.
UESI’s next presentation and luncheon, "Leveraging Survey Technology to restore communities in the wake of Hurricane Ian", will be happening at the CFX headquarters on September 11. We hope to see you there!
The UESI board meets on the third Wednesday of the month at noon and if interested in joining please feel free to email jgonzalez@kpmfranklin.com.

August Report
This past month consisted of various events such as team meetings, networking events, the ASCE Florida Annual Conference, and socials. In an effort to inform those curious about the civil engineering profession, we have been conducting Intern Takeovers on the UCF ASCE Instagram page. Throughout the summer, officers and members have showcased a day in the life at their internship and have answered questions regarding their discipline, position, education, and more. We have also gotten a head start in preparation for the Student Symposium by having our first canoe row practice! Officers have met with our Student Government Representative to discuss funding and have also met with YMF to discuss conference prep. Additionally, our 2nd officer meeting was conducted this past month. Officers discussed future General Body Meetings, overall budgeting, tailgating, individual responsibilities, and more. YMF also hosted a unique networking event at Pups Pub where young professionals got to socialize amongst each other while also enjoying the company of their dogs. A major highlight last month was the ASCE Florida Annual Conference. Five of our officers had the privilege of attending the conference and ASCE Florida Section Quarterly Meeting in Bonita Springs. Officers participated in technical sessions where they learned more about different disciplines in the Civil Engineering field.
