Joint ASCE/FES Broward YMG Social
Happening on November 20th! Save the date!

ASCE Broward is teaming up with FES Broward for a joint social. The social will take place at LauderAle Brewing on November 20th from 6pm - 9pm. Trivia starts at 7pm and all are welcome to join. If you would like to register, feel free to click on the link below.

December Luncheon - Coastal Resiliency
Happening on December 4th! Save the date!

ASCE Broward County would like to announce that the next Monthly Luncheon will take place on December 4th. The Luncheon will feature Jose Lopez discussing Coastal Resiliency. The Luncheon will take place at the UF Hurricane House. More information will be sent out as the details become finalized.
Joint Society Holiday Party
Happening on December 18th! Save the date!

December is fast approaching and that means our annual Holiday Party is right around the corner. This year's Holiday Party will be held at Funky Buddha in Oakland Park. Five Broward Societies will be hosting the event including members from ASCE, FES, ITE, AWWA, and WTS. All members are encouraged to bring can goods to the event. The can goods will be collected and donated to the Pantry of Broward. Last year was a huge success with over 100 members attending and we are looking forward to another great event!
2020 Engineer For A Day
Happening on February 12th! Save the date!

The 4th Annual Engineer for a Day event will take place on Wednesday, February 12th, 2020. The event will be hosted at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 4 offices in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Through this exciting student outreach program, high school students interested in a civil engineering career are able to experience what civil engineers do on a daily basis. The event will be divided into two sessions, morning and afternoon. The morning session will consist of local engineering students, professors, and other professional engineers sharing their engineering experiences and how they have become the engineer that they are today. During the afternoon session, the students will be split into smaller groups and will tour local engineering firms. This will allow the students to experience a real engineering environment and learn about projects that are currently under design and construction.
FL Section Conference - Ft. Lauderdale
Happening July 9th - 11th, 2020! Save the date!

The FL Section Conference will be in sunny Ft. Lauderdale from July 9th - 11th, 2020. The Florida Section Annual Conference brings over 30 technical and professional development sessions in 7 tracks of engineering: structural, geotechnical, environmental & water resources, transportation, utilities, sustainability and professional development. The conference will allow members to connect with one another, learn, and relax. The conference will feature a thinking outside the box leadership seminar geared towards younger members and technical sessions in 30-minute and 50-minute blocks. In addition, the state required two-hour Laws/Rules & Ethics course will be offered. Everyone is encouraged to attend and more detail will be provided as the event draws near.
Highlights of Past Events
Florida Section Annual Conference
The Florida Section Annual Conference was held in Orlando from July 18th - July 19th. Broward Branch officers attended the conference where we received the Small Branch of the Year Award! This award represents all the hard work and dedication that has been put into this branch to make it one of the most successful branches in the State of Florida. The Broward Branch will continue to improve each year and we are all looking forward to what we can accomplish in the years to come.
Joint Lunch Meeting with UESI

ASCE Broward teamed up with the Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI) of Broward County for a joint luncheon on July 26th. The discussion was hosted by John Harter of Cardno and was focused on the upcoming changes to ASCE 38. ASCE 38 is the standard guidelines for the collection and depiction of the existing subsurface utility data. Over 50 members were in attendance and one (1) PDH was provided.
31st Annual ASCE Bowl-A-Thon
The 31st Annual ASCE Bowl-A-Thon was held on August 10th at Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac. The Bowlathon is an annual fundraiser that raises money for scholarships for those in our community pursing a degree in Civil Engineering. This year, 12 teams participated from different companies throughout South Florida helping raise over $2,800! From that amount, $500 was given to the FAU Student Chapter and the remaining $2,300 was given in student scholarships. The event was a great success and we are all looking forward to next years event.
2019 Officer Installation and Awards Banquet
The 2019 Officer Installation and Awards Banquet took place on September 12th at the Hillsboro Club. This year was a memorable year for the ASCE Broward Branch. ASCE Broward celebrated 50 years of success and honored all the past presidents that were in a ttendance. In addition to all the past presidents in attendance, two new Life Members were also recognized. The Keynote speaker was Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr who presented on civil engineering concerns in Broward County. The remainder of the Installation Banquet consisted of recognizing the annual award recipients and the previous years board and chair members. The New Board of Officers were then installed followed by closing remarks from Dario Gerszuny, Broward Branch President.
Presidents and Governors Forum (PGF)
Broward Branch President, Dario Gerszuny, attended the Presidents and Governors Forum at the ASCE Hea dquarters in Reston, VA between September 20th - September 22nd. At the Forum, 107 Section and Branch Presidents, Region Governors and Society Directors from across the country and abroad attended. This Leader Training Committee sponsored event provided opportunities for attendees to learn about ASCE resources, network with other ASCE leaders, and develop skills that would benefit their Sections and Branches. After two solid days spent with ASCE, attendees left with new knowledge useful for their upcoming year as a Section or Branch leader.
ASCE 2019 Convention - Miami
The ASCE Annual Convention was held in Miami from Octob er 10th - October 13th. The ASCE Convention is the Society flagship membership event. It is the single annual opportunity that the entire Society is represented together. Nearly 670 society members and affiliates attended and participated in more than 55 technical and professional sessions, as well as 7 technical and recreational tours to Miami sites and facilities.
Luncheon with ASCE 2020 President Guna
On October 16th, the Palm Beach Branch and the FAU Student Chapter hosted a joint luncheon for ASCE 2020 President Kancheepuram N. Gunalan "Guna". The luncheon was held on the FAU Campus allowing FAU students to attend the event as well. President Guna gave a presentation on "The Future of Engineering" and how our society will be impacted in the near future. This was President Guna's first official visit as the ASCE National President.
November Luncheon - Concrete Pavement Design and Applications
On November 6th, Amy Wedel from the Florida Concrete & Products Association hosted our monthly luncheon to discuss Concrete Pavement Design and Applications. Topics included insight on concrete pavement design regarding proper joint layouts and calculating the life cycle of different pavement types. The c haracteristics of rigid vs flexible pavement were also discussed, particularly when it came to resiliency in flooding conditions. We examined how reflectivity effects urban heat island effects, air quality, lighting and safety. Other concrete applications were introduced, such as roller compacted concrete and full depth reclamation and overlays, which are growing in use across the United States. Over 30 members were in attendance and one (1) PDH was provided.
