E-News for Peer Recovery Professionals | March 2024

One-stop for Training and Certification Information/Applications

Know us as ASAP-NYCB?

For 12 years since it was established by ASAP, the New York Certification Board has served the growing Peer Recovery Profession in NYS and beyond. We've been proud to do so under the visionary leadership of ASAP Executive Director, John Coppola.

You've known us, worked with us, become certified by us having been trained by our Training Registry members, been involved in developing and verifying new peer role certifications, piloted trainings and exams, participated in our workshops in the field and in Trainer Registry Roundtables, heard our presentations at many, many conferences, developed great relationships with our team - Elisabeth, Cathie, Ruth and Doug (the quiet one!).

NOW, know us as InUnityAlliance!

As we've reported in previous E-News, ASAP has merged with the Coalition for Behavioral Health (mental health organization) to form InUnityAlliance (IUA). In our most recent edition (February 27), we welcomed Jihoon Kim as inaugural CEO of IUA - see below.

What does "InUnity Alliance" mean for you?

Outgoing Executive Directors and merger architects, John Coppola (ASAP) and Amy Dorin (CBH), have repeatedly promised "no change" to the services and teams you've come to trust.

So, what does this merger - a major development in our field - mean for you?

  • Your certification? No change!
  • Your certification renewal? No change!
  • Your trainer registry membership? Extended to October 1, 2024
  • Your training approvals? Badges accepted for trainings through the same October 1 date - approval status is contingent on registry membership. No new badges in the meantime-please don't ask.
  • Website updates: New branding is being phased-in. For now, we're still at https://www.asapnys.org/ny-certification-board/ (etc.)
  • Email addresses: New emails are now in use (no need for any confusion!) - ekranson@iuany.org, cgifford@iuany.org, rriddick@iuany.org
  • Please "whitelist" our "iuany.org" address in your inbox delivery system. This may involve briefing your supervisor and/or tech department.

We'll keep you posted on further developments as they're put in place.

One step at a time!

IUA's new CEO

Jihoon Kim, LCSW takes the helm on March 1

"I am excited to bring my experience and deep understanding of advocacy to strategically advance the goals and influence of IUA's member organizations."

ASAP's longtime Executive Director, John Coppola, steps down on March 1 to welcome Jihoon Kim as inaugural CEO of InUnity Alliance, the non-profit created via the merger of ASAP with the Coalition for Behavioral Health. The merger was a personal vision of John's and his personal advocacy a deciding factor in its adoption by ASAP membership.

Jihoon Kim brings a record of distinguished national service in the mental health system, most recently in senior postings in both powerhouses - Washington DC and Albany - to his new role.

Celebrate!

NYCB Director of Certification, Elisabeth Kranson, has just announced record certification figures for 2023. "As the graphic shows, we've grown from welcoming 40 certificants in 2012 to 1,350 last year," she confirmed.

IUA CEO, Jihoon Kim, and incoming NYCB President, Luis Laboy, are joining a vibrant organization in a dynamic field - time to celebrate!
