DOI on Friday claims: Providers will be paid

In late June, the Colorado Division of Insurance (DOI) placed Friday Health Insurance Company into rehabilitation and took control of the company. DOI took this action to protect consumers enrolled in a Friday health plan and to ensure that providers are paid pursuant to the contracts in place with Friday with the funds remaining in the company. Do you see patients with Friday insurance? DOI has prepared a set of frequently asked questions for you. Access it here.

The DOI has set up a special email address for health care providers to contact the DOI with questions and concerns about providing care to Friday members, claims submission, and claims payment. See more information in the FAQ about necessary information to include when contacting the DOI.

Member spotlight: Denver physician-attorney believes in the power of a unified voice to effecting change

CMS continues our monthly member spotlight series with a Q&A with Ricky Dhaliwal, MD, JD, a dual-trained emergency and internal medicine physician and attorney, who is the current vice chair of the Colorado Medical Society’s Council on Legislation.

Why is it important to Dr. Dhaliwal to be involved in advocacy?

"I know if we’re not the ones creating that message, then it’s going to end up being someone else. That someone else might not understand how medicine works or may be incentivized by something that doesn’t benefit patients. If we don’t own this, someone else will and we’ll be left complaining about how medicine used to be."

All CMS members are eligible to be featured in member spotlight; contact enews_editor@cms.org to self-nominate or to nominate one of your colleagues.

American Medical Association-Racial Equity Institute: Groundwater Training, July 12

The American Medical Association will again present the Racial Equity Institute (REI) Groundwater Training, an in-depth introduction to racial equity, on July 12, 2023, 4-7 p.m. MT. Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit will be offered to attendees at no cost upon completion.

This webinar offers the opportunity to learn from and interact with experts from the Racial Equity Institute (REI). REI organizers use stories and data to explain how racism is structural. Exploring historical and modern-day racial inequity, the session introduces an analysis that most find immediately helpful and relevant. The groundwater metaphor helps explain that we live in a racially structured society, which causes racial inequity. In other words, we have a “groundwater” problem, and we need “groundwater” solutions. Starting from there, we begin to unlock transformative change. Register here.

Nominate an outstanding volunteer physician for COPIC's Humanitarian Award

The COPIC Humanitarian Award is presented annually to honor a physician for volunteer medical services and contributions to their community. Once again this award presentation will take place at the CMS Annual Meeting -- this year in Vail, Sept. 22-23 -- during the President's Gala.

COPIC specifically looks to recognize those individuals who unassumingly volunteer outside the spectrum of their day-to-day lives. The recipient of the award designates a $10,000 donation from COPIC to be provided to a health care-related 501(c)(3) organization within their respective state. If you know a worthy candidate, please nominate him or her for this award. Find more information here. Nominations close Aug. 15.
