Anesthesiologists' Organization Joins the CNTR Coalition

Adding to CNTR's multidisciplinary strength, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) joined the coalition at the Stakeholder level. Stakeholders have representation on CNTR's Advisory Council; Scientific Advisory Committee; and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

ASA's Committee on Trauma and Emergency Preparedness (COTEP) expects to propose and collaborate on studies with anesthesiology components.

The addition of ASA brings us to 24 member organizations representing more than 232,000 trauma care professionals from across the spectrum of injury.

Trauma Core and Basic Common Data Elements to be Recommended for Clinical Data Repository

The work of the National Trauma Research Repository (NTRR) CDE Steering Committee and four care environment workgroups continues throughout the summer.

An initial set of 11 core common data elements has been recommended. These are elements that should be included in every clinical trauma study whose data will be uploaded into the NTRR. The four workgroups are currently progressing through Delphi surveys to determine what data elements will also be recommended to be included in studies within the areas of Epidemiology, Prehospital, Acute Hospital, and Outcomes/Rehabilitation.

The NTRR is slated to launch by the end of the summer.

CNTR MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma was a founding member of the original Coalition for National Trauma Research, which formed in 2014.

Along with EAST, WTA, ACS-COT and the old National Trauma Institute (NTI), the original coalition came together to conduct more effective advocacy, and organized National Trauma Research Advocacy Days on Capitol Hill from 2014 to 2018.

The coalition was successful in advocating for an appropriation of $10 million per year for the Trauma Clinical Research Program within the Department of Defense. That line item currently funds the "Linking Investigations in Trauma & Emergency Services" (LITES) network, which has conducted projects on whole blood, hemorrhagic shock, TBI, airway management and prehospital injuries.

Present Your Research to CNTR's Patient & Caregiver Panel

CNTR's standing I-REP Panel meets once a quarter to hear from investigators needing feedback on patient-centered projects. By actively engaging with research-literate patients and caregivers who may benefit from trauma studies, researchers can ensure that the outcomes they plan to measure are meaningful, respective, trauma-informed and relevant to the injured patient.

“This would change a lot of research planning if this voice was included and heard all the time,” declared LJ Punch, MD, a trauma surgeon who presented a proposal to the group at its last session.

The next session is scheduled for July 17, 2024 from 6:00-7:15 p.m. CDT.

NTRAP Research Gaps Spotlight

Jonathan Groner, MD, FACS, NTRAP Pediatric Trauma Delphi Panel leader.

Top Priorities for Pediatric Trauma Research

Each month in 2024, we're showcasing the highest priority research gaps identified by panels of subject matter experts in 11 topic areas as part of the National Trauma Research Action Plan (NTRAP). Following are the top three gaps identified by the Pediatric Trauma Panel:

  • In pediatric trauma patients with hemorrhagic shock, does TXA administration increase risk of DVT or thrombotic events compared to standard of care?

  • In severe pediatric TBI, does the use of ICP monitoring improve survival and long-term functional outcomes when compared to patients treated without ICP monitoring?

  • Are there clinical criteria that can accurately predict those children who may benefit from decompressive craniotomy with blunt trauma-related closed brain injury without epidural/subdural bleed?
