A Half Centry of Memories

Started in 1977 by Mel Clark, Clark Steel Fabricators has been a valuable member of the Lakeside community for almost a half of a century. The company has played key roles in the community from providing good paying jobs to local residents to putting their stamp of quality on numerous projects throughout not only San Diego County, but throughout the rest of Southern California.

When the torch was passed to Mel’s daughter, Kim, and son, Kevin, the expectations were high following in their father’s footsteps. They both grew up around the business, but there is a big difference when you become the two decision makers. In a niche business, such as light structural and miscellaneous metals, quality, communication, ability to hit deadlines in a safe manner, and price are the keys to staying in business. Clark Steel was able to consistently provide all of those in an honest and straight forward manner, which resulted in the highest compliment for a business owner, referrals to other businesses and projects.

As time marches on, Kim and Kevin have decided to move on to the next phase of their lives. Their search to find the right company to carry their tradition of excellence led them to connect with BAPKO Metal, Inc. Familiar with BAPKO as they were frequent competitors on bids, once the two sides sat at the table to discuss the future, it was apparent they had more in common than not. BAPKO was started in 1978 in Orange, CA by Michael Bagatourian who eventually passed the torch to his eldest son, Fred Bagatourian. BAPKO continued working on projects throughout Southern California fabricating and installing rails, canopies, stairs, among others, but also expanded into architectural metals in the late 2000’s. In 2018, Fred made the decision to sell the company to the employees and BAPKO is now a 100% employee-owned company.

Clark Steel Fabricators have been involved in the community of contractors and the San Diego Community at large for as long as they have been in business. A great deal of the involvement has been through the Associated Subcontractors Alliance. Of which Kim served as the President of the ASA in 2005 and received the Mary L. Johnson Award in 2012.

It is with great excitement that BAPKO Metal joins the Associated Subcontractors Alliance in San Diego as one of our ways of continuing the Clark legacy while building our support for the community. As an employee-owned company we take great pride in this effort.

As residents and visitors enter Maine Avenue, one of the legacy pieces Clark Steel gifted to their community was fabricating and installing the Lakeside sign. This iconic landmark will stand the test of time and even though the name in front of the building on Vigilante Road will eventually read BAPKO Metal, Inc., the impact the Clark family has had on the industry and the region will continue on.

From all of us at BAPKO, including the great group of people who are joining the team from Clark, we want to take this opportunity to extend our respect and gratitude to both Kevin and Kim. Kim will continue with BAPKO, and Kevin will complete the balance of Clark Steel Fabricators’ current contracts. So, with that said they will both be a part of things for the foreseeable future, but we wanted to acknowledge the Clark family and how special they are to all of us.

Your ASA President Says...

My fellow ASA Members,

Wow has 2022 flown by! It is hard to believe we are moving into the final quarter of this year. I’m excited for all of us as we prepare to enter 2023. Have you seen the latest construction forecast?  If you haven’t, please do or just look around, there is a lot of dirt being moved. I believe we are in for several years of work in our region, and the ASA is primed and ready. We are continuously thinking of ways to improve and bring the most value to our members. There is no doubt the upcoming years will have unexpected challenges, but we are confident in our position. We have the staff, board, and committee members with years of experience, and we are here for you.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Our network has hundreds of contacts in about any capacity you may need.  You, the members keep us moving forward and with your continued support our possibilities are endless.

Lastly, I would like to take a moment to thank all our ASA volunteers. You are being recognized for the hard work you put into the association to make it a success. It is not overlooked and very appreciated!  Our association is stronger because of you.

Sincerely,

ASA President
