AR Magazine is Available Online and Landing in Mailboxes!
Some highlights for this issue are:
-
More in-person activity is evident, as exhibited in this issue by reports in NEWS & NOTES and our annual descriptions of upcoming workshop and festival events in LISTEN & PLAY. President Carol Mishler reports on a panel discussion on The Future of Early Music, in which she participated along with representatives of other early music service organizations.
-
In FEATURES, Peter Seibert chronicles the life of William Byrd (who died in 1623), and offers music by Byrd for recorder players to enjoy during this anniversary year.
-
Also in FEATURES, we say goodbye to Honorary ARS Vice President Wini Jaeger (1926-2022). Since her life was so entwined with that of our Honorary President Erich Katz, a musical work by him mentioned as played by her, The Eternal Day, is posted in AR Extras.
-
In LEARN, Lobke Sprenkeling goes into detail about applying double tonguing in your music. A PDF of the article can also be found in AR Extras. (A video demonstrating its application will be posted in months to come.)

Our newest Members Library Edition music "Recorder Haiku" is by Charlotte van Ryswyk with poetry by Marcyn del Clements. Four delightful short pieces match the carefully crafted brevity of their accompanying poems while evoking the imagery suggested by them. Logged-in members can listen to the whole piece with spoken words here, as well as download the piece and fill in a missing part as a play-along.

Play-the-Recorder Month 2023
March is Play-the-Recorder Month, and the 2023 Play-the-Recorder-Month (PtRM) preparations are well under way. The ARS is again planning to make the most of the month with a challenging project that we can all enjoy together. Members can find the piece composed for this occasion, "Quo Vadis?" by Victor Eijkhout, in print with the Winter American Recorder. It can also be found online via the PtRM and Music Libraries pages, where there are play-along videos so you can learn the piece on your own. As in past years, ARS will offer a Zoom play-in event with the composer on Play-the-Recorder Day, Saturday March 18. Click to learn more about PtRM 2023

As of this writing, Bob Tennent is credited on IMSLP with editing 17 works and arranging another 285 – most of them transposed for recorder ensembles.
