AR Magazine is Available Online and Landing in Mailboxes!
Some highlights for this issue are:
-
This is the end of an era, as it's the last issue by retiring Editor Gail Nickless, who is handing the reins to Managing Editor Geoffrey Burgess and Print Layout Specialist Mary Humphrey (see below). Read about the ARS Board's resolution honoring Gail here.
-
In FEATURES, two professional recorder players set out to test 43 plastic recorders over a two-year period. Read the findings in The Plastic Soprano Survey Results from Wayne Hankin and Aldo Abreu. Also read their full article text (including models not to buy, models not tested, claims made by some models, etc.) plus their full database and charts in AR Extras, and hear some of the better soprano recorders they tested in a video on the ARS YouTube channel.
-
Also in FEATURES, retiring AR editor Gail Nickless talks with Benjamin S. Dunham. These two editors shepherded a changing AR through 35 years of its 65 volumes.
-
In LEARN, Lobke Sprenkeling offers essential tips for recorder consorts, in part one of this set of articles.

The Members' Library Edition with this issue is called "Bee Happy" by Glasgow-based composer Riko Suzuki, who says "This piece should be played with a smile on your face." It is a great opportunity for recorder players to practice flutter-tonguing. Glen Shannon describes the piece: "Infectious joy awaits the players and listeners of this upbeat and lighthearted quartet." Play-along files are available thanks to Chaz Warren.

North American Virtual Recorder Society presents their June Playing Meeting
with Jody Miller
When: Saturday, June 22, 2 - 3:30 PM, EDT
Cost: NAVRS Membership is $20 and each playing session is $15.
Membership is not required for your first meeting but there is a charge of $15.
Tenor, Tenor: This line's a winner! Jody Miller will take NAVRS members through two uses of "tenor" as a musical concept. Starting in the 13th century, the cantus firmus, or melody, most frequently in the tenor line. We'll play several pieces with these melodies that are flanked by more ornate outer parts. Session participants will also be encouraged to bring out their tenor recorders for some newer music that makes use of this marvelous size of recorder. Don't worry, though--there'll be parts for other sizes of instruments, too!
For more information and to register, visit the NAVRS website.
